When it comes to meal prep, do you know how many times the “sandwich” has saved my ass? Roadtrips, camping, backpacking, picnics, plane rides, potlucks, desperate dinners, equally desperate breakfasts, hangry toddler meltdowns, equally hangry mom meltdowns…. So why shouldn’t the sandwich rule the culinary world, it’s so versatile? Yet it remains so under-rated….”merely a basic, throw-together, tide-me-over”, they say, not even worthy of calling a meal! We forget all the saves, the countless satisfied tummies we knew the sandwich could be counted on for. And I ask you, who else can pull off toasted, grilled, triple decker-ed, french-ed, afternoon tea-ed, open-faced, two-faced?….don’t ask me about that last one.
At this point, 11 years in as a seasoned mom and wife, I’m expert level sandwich maker. They call me the “SandWitch.” Sometimes pronounced “Sandbich” depending on what dialect of hangry everyone might be speaking. And sure, at first glance the sandwich doesn’t seem like much of a culinary endeavor, but when you consider the bread alone, you’d have to give credit where credit is due.
Consider our soft wheat sandwich loaf. It’s like Wonder bread only real sourdough, with whole wheat healthy vibes, lightly sweetened with honey, super buttery and… just not evil. No Wonder-ing if it’s healthy, but still plush, fluffy and tender; she’s a doll. Best for classic soft PB&J and pretty tea time sandwiches, breaky toast or straight up eating from the bag….it’s frequently done!! And it’s a big 2lb loaf that can handle a weeks’ worth of family lunches and then some.
Then there’s our 1lb rustic workhorse loaf. Chewy artisan crust, balanced sourdough flavor with a pillowy crumb that can handle a substantial load and holds up to the grill, broiler, panini press or your kid smushing it in the grocery bag on the way home. This is your go-to for grilled cheese, clubs, deckers, open faced tuna melts, pressed hot sandwiches or bruschetta.
Both of these works of edible art take over 24 hours to make, from the mixing, slow fermentation and hand shaping, to the final bake. So that all YOU have to do is pull it from the bag, and with “some assembly required”, you’ve got a feast.
So yes, thank you sandwich loaf, for keeping our culinary dignity intact while we throw all the oddball things at you and you manage a meal of it. And thank your household "Sandbich" while you’re at it, for making the ordinary, next level when using either the Soft Wheat or Rustic sandwich loaf from Gallucci Family Farm.
