šŸ” A Little Hen House Update

The ovens are cooling, the mixers are resting, and Chef Birdie is taking a brief pause this week.

Hayward Hens Homestead Bakery will be CLOSED for a few days and will re-open on Friday, June 5th.

Thank you for supporting our small farm and bakery. Your encouragement, orders, and sweet friendships mean more than you know. While the bakery is closed, I’ll be spending some much-needed time recharging, self-caring, and preparing for the busy summer season ahead.

I look forward to creating something sweet for you when I return!

With gratitude,
Chef Birdie

Well, friends… it has been a busy week here at Hayward Hens Homestead & Bakery! šŸ“

While most folks were sleeping, I was over here running on buttercream, duck eggs, coffee, and a prayer.

This week’s creations included:

šŸ¦„ A magical unicorn Cake Batter Confetti birthday cake complete with rainbow Cookies & Cream cupcakes

āœˆļø A very special 2nd birthday celebration for a sweet little boy whose Delta Airlines family first trusted me with his 1st birthday treats last year. There is nothing sweeter than having families come back year after year and allowing me to be a small part of their milestones. Seeing it all come together at delivery with all the magical work his momma did to make his big day special made it even sweeter!

šŸŽ€ Beautiful pastel cookies in Strawberry Cheesecake and Madagascar Vanilla Bean flavors designed for an up-and-coming cosmetology student, inspired by her dream aesthetic and future career.

šŸ‘¶šŸ¼ Two platters of cookies and brownies for a baby shower for which I had the pleasure recently of creating custom decorated gender reveal cookies for the expectant momma recently.

…And, a Stranger Things Red Velvet cake with edible fake blood drip and a scary demogorgon crawling out of it that paid tribute to the TV series filmed here locally.

šŸŽ‚ Custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and edible art created from scratch right here on our little farm in Georgia.

One of my greatest joys is watching clients become repeat clients and then become friends. Whether it’s a first birthday, graduation, wedding, retirement, baby shower, corporate event, or ā€œjust because,ā€ I never take your trust for granted.

Every cookie is hand-decorated.

Every cake is baked fresh to order.

Every order is created with gratitude for the people who choose to support a local small business.

Thank you for allowing this one-woman bakery to continue doing what she loves.

Now tell me—which creation is your favorite from this week’s lineup? šŸ«¶šŸ½

Sometimes the best question isn’t, ā€œWhat do you charge?ā€ but rather… ā€œHow can we create something meaningful together?ā€ šŸ’™āœˆļø

As I share my custom ordering flyer today, I thought it would be the perfect time to show an example of what happens when clients trust the creative process and value intentional details.

This week, it was my absolute honor to be a small part of celebrating a very special milestone at Delta Airlines Corporate Headquarters — a beloved flight attendant’s 35th Delta-versary! šŸ›«

If there’s one thing Delta Airlines knows how to do, it’s celebrate their people well. And goodness, what a joy it was helping honor Jeanie and a career filled with memories, miles, and meaningful moments.

The word was already out from previous Delta celebrations that my Lemon Cheesecake cookies were an absolute must šŸ‹āœØ (and of course, my rich Madagascar Vanilla Bean cookies had to make an appearance too).

One of my favorite parts? Designing custom cookies inspired by highlights from Jeanie’s career, including surprise edible keepsakes featuring special photos and memories from her years in the sky. Those personal touches are the kind of details that turn dessert into something truly unforgettable.

This is exactly why the questions you ask when booking custom cookies matter:

✨ What experience are you hoping to create?
✨ What story are we telling?
✨ What details matter most to the person being celebrated?

Because custom cookies are never just cookies over here at Hayward Hens — they’re edible storytelling made from scratch, crafted with intention, and baked with a whole lot of heart. šŸ“šŸ’™

Thank you again to Delta Airlines for allowing me to ā€œfly the coopā€ to celebrate another incredible employee milestone. It is always such a sweet honor serving your team.

Xoxo,
Birdie

Sometimes cakes carry stories bigger than buttercream. 🌸

Four years ago, life handed Mark and me a crossroads.

We had the opportunity to transfer to one of three places—back toward Kentucky where family roots run deep and be a few hours away from family, Florida where sunshine and loved ones waited somewhat nearby, or here…Georgia where my aunt and cousin had lived for decades.

For reasons I couldn’t quite explain at the time, my spirit felt pulled to this place long before we ever unpacked a single box. It always felt like home when I would visit Aunt Kathy and my cousin, Jenny. Maybe God knew what I needed before I did.

After years of struggling medically, my body desperately needed warmer weather. And let’s be honest… moving to a major poultry state when you’re a full-blown ā€œChicken Tenderā€ and a duck egg baking enthusiast felt a little like divine intervention too. šŸ“šŸ¦†šŸ„“

What was supposed to be a carefully planned move quickly became chaos. We sold our home, packed our entire life—including chickens, dog, cats, and a portable coop—into a U-Haul and moved over 500 miles in less than two weeks… before even having a new house under contract.

We arrived believing we had one plan.

God had another.

In the chaos, my cousin Jennifer graciously opened her home to us in Senoia during one of the most stressful and uncertain seasons of our lives. While my body struggled to cooperate and my husband worked long shifts, she gave us shelter, kindness, and stability when we needed it most.

Soon after, God provided us a home just down the road with enough room for the flock and enough peace for healing.

Life and family relationships are rarely perfect. Sometimes they stretch us. Sometimes they humble us. Sometimes they ask us to give grace when it feels hard and receive grace when we least expect it.

But if age and faith have taught me anything, it’s this: family is still one of God’s sweetest gifts.

Having someone you can call just over a mile away during life’s ebbs and flows is something I never want to take for granted. It is a blessing many others do not have. Having a family member who knows how to bake is an added bonus…as is having a family member who can fix your hair when you try to cut your own bangs! āœ‚ļøšŸ˜‘

So for Jennifer’s birthday this past weekend, I wanted to create something meaningful—something that quietly said ā€œthank you,ā€ ā€œI see you,ā€ and ā€œI’m grateful.ā€

I made her a three-layer Strawberry Cheesecake cake (her favorite šŸ“) adorned with handmade edible gumpaste flowers: pink and lavender roses, white dogwoods, hydrangeas in soft hues, and a peony I learned to make just for her cake.

Each flower held meaning:

🌸 Peony — Indiana’s state flower, reminding me of our roots and my grandmother’s garden. Peonies symbolize love, loyalty, prosperity, and harmony. (And fun fact: little ants help peonies bloom by feeding on their sweet nectar and protecting them along the way—sometimes healing takes helpers too.)

šŸ¤ Dogwood — a symbol of resurrection, resilience, and hope.

🌹 Roses — the PINK rose is a symbol of appreciation, joy, happiness, femininity, and beauty while the LAVENDER rose is a symbol of love, enchantment, majesty and admiration.

šŸ’œ Hydrangea — representing heartfelt emotion, grace, understanding, and gratitude. And goodness knows everyone could use a little extra grace maybe that is why God designed each hydrangeas head to carry around 144 individual blooms on it.

Maybe growing older teaches us this: healing doesn’t always happen loudly. Sometimes it looks like showing up. Baking a cake. Offering kindness. Fixing another woman’s crown. Trying again.

And sometimes love looks like buttercream, sugar flowers, and a simple reminder that family—however imperfect—is still worth tending.

Happy Birthday, Jenny. I love you. I see you. I appreciate you. I thank God for you—and not just because you introduced me to Partners Pizza’s Baked Potato Pizza so many years ago!

šŸ‡šŸ«– ā€œWhy, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.ā€ — Alice in Wonderland

Oh, what curious little turns life does take.

Once upon a not-so-very-long-ago year of 1989, while dressed in the striped uniform of a candystriper, I wandered the halls of a hospital where a tiny little girl entered this world—born to my beloved godmother, pink-cheeked and entirely unaware of the marvelous adventures awaiting her.

And, as time does flutter by like a hurried White Rabbit, I have watched her through the curious chapters of growing up—the sunshine and storms, the growing and becoming, the laughing and the tears. And now, quite impossibly and wonderfully, she is preparing to tumble into a brand-new adventure of her own…

Motherhood. šŸ¤šŸ‘¶šŸ¼

Though I cannot board a flying contraption and make my way back to Indianapolis for her baby shower, a tiny parcel of my affection shall still arrive in my stead—wrapped carefully in sugar, butter, whimsy, and love.

You see, she requested an Alice in Wonderland tea party, and as everyone properly knows…

ā€œWe’re all mad here.ā€ šŸŽ©ā™£ļøšŸ‡ā™„ļøā™£ļøā™¦ļø

So into my kitchen wonderland I skipped, gathering flour, butter, duck eggs, and fanciful notions to create the most delightfully peculiar collection of cookies in Blueberry Cheesecake and Lemon Cheesecake—for these, apparently, are flavors much adored by mothers-to-be. In fact, my cheesecake cookies have developed quite the reputation among expectant mamas. I’ve had more than one appear upon my doorstep (one even last week) hoping to find ā€œjust one extra,ā€ as though pregnancy itself whispers sweet dessert secrets into the ears of hungry bellies. šŸ˜‚

This curious collection required every trinket and trick from my baker’s cupboard of imagination.

I designed a pregnant Alice, for surely every expectant mama deserves to be the heroine of her own wonderland tale. Since tea shall be poured at the celebration, I fashioned whimsical teacups and teapots worthy of the Mad Hatter himself.

There are wee infant versions of Alice, the Mad Hatter, a mischievous little Cheshire Kitten, and even the Queen’s bunny rabbit—complete with the sweetest rattle cookie and adorned with a modeling chocolate bow dressed in a matching teacup print. Why, even the white royal icing roses could not remain untouched! Much like the Queen of Hearts’ anxious card soldiers, they have been lovingly painted red in great haste before Her Majesty might cry, ā€œOff with their heads!ā€ ā¤ļøšŸŒ¹

And because Wonderland simply refuses to leave well enough alone, I even created matching modeling chocolate cupcake toppers for her gracious party host so that every sweet upon the dessert table might coordinate in proper curious fashion. After all, what sort of tea party would it be if the sweets themselves did not appear to be in on the secret? šŸ§šŸ«–

Every peculiar little detail has been sprinkled with affection, stitched together with memories, and made with no small amount of love.

These cookies shall be flying off to Indianapolis later today, and I do hope—with all the hopeful wishing of Alice herself—that they arrive in one delicious piece. Though I may not be there to pour the tea or join the merriment, I hope she feels every ounce of how dearly she and this sweet little babe are loved.

Now then, dear friends…

If invited to the Mad Hatter’s table, which curious cookie would you choose first? šŸ«–šŸ‡

As we prepared for Memorial Day, I found myself thinking about the true heart behind it.

Before it was called Memorial Day, it was known as ā€œDecoration Day,ā€ born in the painful aftermath of the Civil War when grieving families—especially women—would gather to clean the graves of loved ones and place fresh flowers on them. It was an act of remembrance, love, and honoring sacrifice. Long before cookouts and long weekends, it was about people tending to sacred ground and remembering those who had gone before them.

One of the most powerful—and often overlooked—early observances happened in Charleston, South Carolina in May 1865.

Recently freed Black Americans reburied Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp and organized a massive memorial procession. Thousands participated, including Black schoolchildren carrying flowers, ministers, and Union troops. They honored the dead with songs, prayers, and decorated graves. Many historians now see this as one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations.

After the Civil War, grieving communities began gathering to honor the dead. Women’s groups in both the North and South organized cemetery cleanups and grave decorations.

In the South, groups called Ladies’ Memorial Associations began decorating Confederate graves as early as 1865–1866. Northern communities were doing similar things for Union soldiers. Interestingly, there were moments of reconciliation too—some Southern women reportedly decorated both Confederate and Union graves.

One particularly moving story comes from Columbus, Mississippi, in 1866. Women decorating Confederate graves also placed flowers on neglected Union graves nearby. Newspapers spread the story nationwide, inspiring poems and discussions about national healing.

What began as people simply bringing flowers to graves because their hearts were broken eventually became one of America’s biggest holiday weekends. Yet at its core, Memorial Day was never intended to celebrate war—it was meant to remember sacrifice and mourn the cost of it.

It reminds me so much of my own family traditions in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Every single year before Memorial Day, my family goes to the graveyards to clean them up, pull weeds, trim around the stones, and place fresh flower arrangements on the graves of those we love. It has never felt like an obligation—it feels like honor. Love. Remembering.

Even now, when traveling through Kentucky, we still make it a point to stop and visit the graves of our loved ones who have already gone on to Glory before us. We visit the old family graveyard near our original homestead, Cloyd’s (MacLeod) Landing, and places along the Cumberland Gap and River. Those places hold stories. They hold people we still love.

One story that has always deeply touched me is that of my Aunt Judy. She died the same day she came into this world.

My grandmother (Mammy) had been gravely ill and bedridden from toxemia during pregnancy and was so sick that she could not even attend the funeral of her firstborn daughter. Our family has always shared the story of how my great-grandfather and great-uncles stepped in and lovingly handled every arrangement to bury baby Judy while Mammy remained bedridden for nearly a month.

To this day, my family still remembers Judy. They still place flowers for her. They still speak her name. And every year, I’m touched beyond words that they never forget her.

There is something holy about remembering.

In Scripture, when someone told Jesus they wanted to first go and bury their father before following Him, Jesus responded: ā€œLet the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.ā€ (Luke 9:60)

At first glance, that verse can sound harsh, but I’ve never believed Jesus was dismissing grief or dishonoring burial. Throughout Scripture we see the dead cared for with dignity. Rather, I believe Christ was teaching about priorities and the urgency of the Kingdom while still understanding that honoring our loved ones matters deeply.

Remembering matters.

Tending graves matters.

Telling the stories matters.

Because as long as we remember them, speak their names, and pass down their stories, a piece of them still walks alongside us. We can learn from history. We can learn from those who came before us…

So this Memorial Day, while we honor those who sacrificed for our country, I’m also thankful for the generations before me—for the family who taught me that love doesn’t end at the graveyard gate. šŸŒæšŸ¤

I pray you are celebrating with your loved ones this holiday and I look forward to baking you happy for your next!

Birdie

Well hey there, sugar… let’s have a little honest conversation about free samples. šŸ“āœŒšŸ½

Lately, I’ve had an increase in requests from non-corporate clients asking for complimentary samples of cakes and decorated cookies before booking.

I’m going to say this kindly, but clearly: Hayward Hens Bakery does not offer free samples to price shoppers or prospective residential clients.

And truthfully? Asking a small custom baker for freebies is a little like walking into a boutique and asking to take home a handbag to ā€œtest it outā€ before deciding if you value the craftsmanship.

Here’s why:

I offer 35+ gourmet flavors across custom cakes and decorated cookies. Everything I make is from scratch, baked fresh to order, and handcrafted one order at a time—not pulled from a freezer or mass-produced in a warehouse.

That means premium ingredients, real butter, Madagascar vanilla, quality chocolate, unbleached flour, homemade buttermilk, and yes… often farm-fresh duck and chicken eggs literally collected by my two hands that morning from my feathered ladies šŸ¦†šŸ“ (because around here, ā€œfarm to ovenā€ is more than a cute phrase).

To create samples of every flavor someone might want would mean making 70+ separate batters and doughs for people who are often simply comparison shopping or hoping for freebies. That is neither realistic nor respectful of a small business owner’s time, ingredients, or labor.

The clients who value my work understand that when you book with Hayward Hens, you’re not paying for ā€œcheap.ā€ You’re investing in scratch-made desserts, custom artistry, experience, quality ingredients, and years upon years of skill.

I’ve been blessed to be published in multiple magazines, win baking awards, and serve both corporate and loyal residential clients who return year after year. Those relationships and repeat bookings mean more to me than any sales pitch ever could.

So if your goal is finding the cheapest option in town, I’ll lovingly tell you right now with Southern honesty: I probably ain’t your baker—and that’s okay. šŸ‘©šŸ»ā€šŸ³šŸ‘©šŸæā€šŸ³šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ³šŸ‘©šŸ½ā€šŸ³ There are lots of talented bakers and chefs in our area to choose from. Each has their own strengths.

But if you value handcrafted desserts, luxury-level custom work, farm-fresh ingredients, and someone who pours her whole heart into every order…

Well darlin’, I’d love to bake you happy—like a duckling in a puddle kind of happy!šŸ¦†

Well howdy there, friends! šŸ“āœŒšŸ½

I’ve noticed quite a few new faces around here lately, so I thought I’d properly introduce myself!

I’m Birdie—the owner, baker, decorator, dishwasher, chicken/duck wrangler, delivery driver, late-night buttercream fixer, and heart behind Hayward Hens Bakery here in Georgia. In other words… if you’ve ordered from me, you’re getting a true one-woman small business experience! šŸ˜‰ I’m a bit addicted to coffee and it fuels my baking…

Hayward Hens started from a lifelong love of baking. I grew up helping in my grandmother’s Indianapolis restaurant (but I’m not a Yankee) where desserts were always homemade, later studied baking, trained through a bakery internship, and even studied in France. Baking has never been ā€œjust a businessā€ for me—it has always been part of who I am.

What makes Hayward Hens a little different? I’m a farm-based cottage bakery located on a working poultry farm. Many of my baked goods are made with duck eggs and farm-fresh chicken eggs from our own flock (yes, my feathered ladies work hard around here too šŸ¦†šŸ“). I firmly believe ingredients matter, which is why I choose quality ingredients and make everything as healthy as possible from scratch with a whole lot of love.

I specialize in custom decorated cookies (the award-winning kind šŸ˜‰), luxury cakes, cupcakes, dipped treats, dessert bars, and gourmet flavors (35+ and counting!). From weddings and baby showers to corporate events and birthdays, I absolutely love bringing people’s visions to life through edible art.

Over the years, I’ve been incredibly honored to be featured in magazines, win baking competitions, and create desserts for amazing families and corporate clients—but the greatest blessing has been the relationships and trust my clients place in me for their special moments.

Now for something important to me beyond baking…

I pride myself on creating a safe, welcoming space here on social media and through my business. Hayward Hens is an inclusive bakery and a place where kindness matters. Red, yellow, black, white, pink, or polkadot—everybody is welcome here, everybody has value, and everybody deserves kindness and respect.

A little random fact about me: my background includes both legal studies and ministry—an interesting combination, I know! Life has shaped me in ways I never expected, and I’m currently in a season of deconstructing and rebuilding my faith with grace, curiosity, and compassion. What I’ve come to believe deeply is this: people matter, everyone carries value, and every single person is loved beyond measure.

If you’re new here, I’d love for you to say hello and tell me—what brought you to my page?

And if you’ve ordered from Hayward Hens before, feel free to drop your favorite flavor or experience in the comments for our new friends! šŸ”

Thank you for being here and supporting this little farm bakery dream of mine.

šŸ“ A Little Hayward Hens June Update šŸ“

Friends, June is filling up FAST, and I only have a limited number of openings left for custom orders before my calendar is officially full. Please also note that Hayward Hens will be CLOSED June 26–29 while this baker celebrates her own birthday šŸŽ‚šŸ’• (because even farm girls need cake and a little rest too šŸ˜‰).

Also, I’ve had more and more inquiries lately about GLUTEN-FREE custom treats, so I wanted to share some important information:

—I am happy to offer gluten-free decorated cookies in select gourmet flavors including Madagascar Vanilla Bean and Cookies & Cream (made with gluten-free Oreos).

However, I want to be fully transparent with my clients: while I take great care to sanitize thoroughly between orders, my kitchen is NOT a certified gluten-free kitchen. If you or your loved one has Celiac Disease, please understand there is still a slight possibility of cross-contamination. Your health and safety matter to me, and I always want clients to make informed decisions.

šŸ“… One important reminder as graduation, weddings, showers, and summer celebrations are in full swing:

I am unable to hold dates on my calendar.
An inquiry does not reserve your spot, and an unpaid invoice means you do not have an official booking. Payment in full is required to secure your date, and openings are always first come, first served.

Thank you for continuing to support this one-woman bakery + farm dream. Y’all keep me busier than a hen in a feed room, and I’m so grateful for every order. šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ“

šŸ“© If you’d like to book for June, don’t wait too long to reach out!
