People love to say “support local” until they see the price of a tomato grown by someone who actually knows their customers by name. But every dollar we spend shapes the kind of communities and food systems we help sustain.

One path sends money to large corporations that are often far removed from the neighborhoods where we live. The other helps independent farms and small businesses stay afloat. It keeps more money circulating locally, supports local jobs, and helps preserve farmland that might otherwise be sold for development.

That extra few dollars at a farmers market isn’t just paying for produce. In many cases, it supports shorter supply chains, fresher food, and farming operations that are smaller and more connected to the people they serve. Some local farms also use more sustainable growing practices, which can benefit soil health and reduce environmental strain — though practices vary from farm to farm.

Farmers markets do more than sell food. They create spaces where people meet growers directly, ask questions about how food is produced, and build stronger community connections. And because locally grown produce is often harvested closer to peak ripeness, many people find it tastes better, too.

A supermarket purchase is usually just a transaction. Buying directly from local growers can have a wider impact that reaches beyond the checkout line.

Vote with your dollars. Because whether we realize it or not, we’re all supporting something with the way we spend our money.

Jimmy Red corn seedlings are coming along! This is the corn we mill into grits and cornmeal! When cooked it turns a shade of blue! Giving you blue cornbread!
