So Good It's Gawne

So Good It's Gawne Baked goods and NOM NOM NOMs for the people! The roots of SO GOOD IT'S GAWNE were planted years ago, when my parents would make their annual Christmas cookies.

My sisters and I would be enlisted to help with some recipes, and eventually, were turned loose on our own to make our own recipes. My personal specialty became the timeless No-Bake Cookie, or as my family calls them, Brown Bumpies. The ball really got rolling in December of 2004. While driving home from southern California to Phoenix for Christmas, the transmission of my old Mitsubishi Galant ("R

oxanne", for those of you who may remember her) decided that the only forward gear that was going to work was third gear. And so, Roxanne was laid up in a shop in Phoenix for two weeks having her transmission rebuilt, and I was stuck at my parents' house with nothing to do. And so, my mother suggested that I take care of the family Christmas cookie list. I began to gather recipes - some from the family recipe tree, others from what was back then the wild frontier of Google - and one thousand, two hundred ninety-six cookies later, I had filled the needs of not only my parents' Christmas cookie list, but my own as well. I didn't stop there, of course, and as time passed, I continued experimenting. Thousands of cookies, brownies, muffins, cakes, cupcakes, pies, and breads later, I found myself a student at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity. Wake Div has Coffee Hour every Thursday at 11:00 AM, and when Shannon Martin sent out an e-mail to the student body at the beginning of the year asking for baking volunteers for Coffee Hour, I signed up. Over years one and two at Wake Div, I brought in numerous different recipes. My baked goods became so ubiquitous at Coffee Hour that when year three rolled around, it was decided that Coffee Hour should be my work study. Then, one Thursday during year three, I made cannoli. I posted the recipe online, Shannon saw it, and suggested that I should create SO GOOD IT'S GAWNE. And so I did. And once you taste my baked goods, I think you'll agree... they're so good, they'll soon be gone.

In 2022:
I took twenty late night trips to CHOSIN to drop off baked goods for the duty sections, with the final one coming on New Year's Eve.
There were seventeen more occasions on which I took baked goods to the CHOSIN wardroom, usually on a Monday morning, but I was wily and unpredictable with that.
And of course, on December 12th, I donned my Santa hard hat and I took 80 dozen Christmas cookies to CHOSIN for the entire crew.
I look forward to bringing in delicious treats a few more times before I move on board the ship and no longer have access to a kitchen.

S'mores cookies: AN EXPERIMENT GONE HORRIBLY WRONG

Made with ground graham crackers in place of the flour and most of the sugar, they probably would've turned out fine with just the chocolate chips. The marshmallows, however, melted and caused mayhem.

That said, I do not consider this a complete failure, for two reasons: one, they are freaking DELICIOUS, and two, I believe that if I tried this again in a pan, brownie-style, they could actually be quite successful as cookie bars.

Gonna be a tasty time in the CHOSIN wardroom tomorrow.

And yes, I'm aware I misspelled Ghirardelli. I didn't notice it until the label was already on the box, and I'm not changing it now.

So I was making cookies a little while ago for tonight's duty section on USS Chosin, as well as the wardroom and chief's mess. I decided to try my hand at making sugar cookies, like the soft thick frosted ones you get at the grocery store, except in the shape of Easter eggs.
I had planned to frost them in green, pink, and yellow pastel colors. I baked the cookies, then made the green frosting, but as I started frosting the first cookie, I had this INTENSELY strong scent-related memory triggered, and I suddenly had a vision of myself doing something very similar twenty-nine years ago.
In the spring of 1993, I had qualified to go to the National Spelling Bee for the first time. It was an expensive proposition, so all manner of fundraising was conducted, including bake sales. These bake sales fell in the midst of the Phoenix Suns' playoff run to the Finals, and more specifically, the first one came in the middle of their first round series against the L.A. Lakers, during which Paul Westphal guaranteed that they would come back from being down 2-0, win three straight games, and move on in the playoffs (spoiler: they did). In order to capitalize on this, we made a significant number of cookies frosted in purple and orange with the jersey numbers of the various Phoenix Suns on them. They sold like hotcakes.
And so, instead of pink and yellow, I decided that the other two colors just HAD to be purple and orange. Amazing what scent memory will do for you.

So, a little while ago, I walked onto the CHOSIN barge's mess deck with the box of freshly baked cookies (Ranger cookies, for those wanting to know) for tonight's duty section. Almost as soon as I set the box down, one of the junior seamen was opening it up. He took out a cookie, took a bite, and looked at me with eyes wide - "Holy crap, Chaps, you're like a holy Keebler Elf!"

Holy Keebler Elf? I'll take it.
