What do you get when you combine an abundance of mashed potatoes, an inventive confectioner, and a popular minister? If you’re a born and bred Mainer, you know we’re talking about the iconic Needham candy.
There are several fun stories about the origin of the classic Needham candy, a sweet candy with solid roots in Maine. The Needham was a clever combination that included coconut, mashed potato, confectioner’s sugar, and butter. A Portland confectioner named John Seavey started selling this delectable confection in the early 1870s. As the story goes, the quickly popular treat was named after a well-known evangelical minister of the time, the Rev. George Needham. He was a preacher with a great backstory that included an involuntary tattooing and an escape from Patagonian cannibals. (It’s worth looking him up!) Maine housewives were soon making Needhams in their own kitchens, and the candy became a mainstay in our state’s array of truly “original Maine foods.”
Where are we going with this? We are *not* selling Needhams, but in true Mainer fashion, our baker has combined the delight of the Maine Needham with the Whoopie Pie to present you with a wonderfully delicious Needham Whoopie Pie! Yes, there’s coconut, and yes, there’s Maine mashed potato– both combined in a delightfully light and sweet filling…and, no, you can’t taste the potato!
We have our Needham Whoopie Pies clearly marked, but you can also look for the mini chocolate chips in the filling that signal that you’re reaching for this “full-stop” Maine treat. …and just in time for the local Whoopie Pie Festival!

“Homemade.” It’s a word that works hard, here in the Café and Bakery. We take pride in offering made-from-scratch food, from our bakery goodies to our “mixed” salads and soups. Some of our homemade foods are created by individuals, but many of our offerings are a result of teamwork. Our pie crusts are a perfect example of that teamwork. One person on our crew might mix up a batch of pie dough, while another measures out and forms dough balls for yet another person to roll out as pie crust disks. Those disks are laid out in individual pie pans and frozen…but not for long. In a single week during the opening weeks of the season, we can easily go through more than 100 of those crusts to make our pies, quiches, and chicken pot pies. By the peak of the season in mid-summer, we might use upwards of 150+ pie crusts. Is it worth all the effort? Without hesitation, we say, “You bet!”

“What’s next?”
We hear that question all season long, as folks anticipate the progression from one crop to the next. In some ways, it’s very predictable: beet greens come before beets, berries come before corn, and tomatoes come before pumpkins. However, a lot of what happens from week to week depends on Mother Nature. The crops need rain– that’s all of them. Some need the boost of hot days– peppers, for example. Others need cooler weather– we’re talkin’ broccoli or cauliflower here. Frankly, though, it’s mostly about how the weather rolls from day to day.

So...back to the question, “What’s next?” Here’s the short list: A tour of the fields shows that the peas are moving along well (check out the picture!). We may have some fresh peas in the Stand by the end of June (stay tuned!). The strawberries are in bloom, with some plants already bearing small green berries (huzzah!). The lettuces are showing promise, too (yahoo!).

Hang on! The season will be cranking at full speed before we know it. Until then, we’re all anticipating the unbeatable flavor of fresh food from the fields!

We are honored– and beyond delighted!– to display three paintings in our Café by renowned artist, neighbor, and friend Alan Bray. The trio of paintings, called “Syd’s Scarecrows,” will be on display in our Café this week and next, Thursday through Saturday, for their world premiere.
Alan has long admired Sid’s inventiveness when creating scarecrows for the fields. They aren’t the typical straw-stuffed characters. A closer look reveals a combination of cast-off clothing, repurposed plastic bottles, and technology (like motion-sensitive spotlights), for startling the critters. After being puzzled as to how to render the scarecrows, Alan landed on an approach reminiscent of Europe’s 15th and early 16th-century portraiture, when the subject was painted in front of a landscape that was familiar to the person. “Syd’s Scarecrows” depict, in meticulous detail, three of the farm’s stalwart crop-guards– each in front of a landscape in our fields. Alan’s portraits reflect not only our scarecrows’ utilitarian purpose, but the unique “personality” of each character.
These three paintings will join other paintings by Alan for a one-person show at Caldbeck Gallery, 12 Elm Street, Rockland, Maine. The show will be opening on Friday, Sep 4th. Until then, come see these characterful portraits before they hit the art world!

Here it is, the very end of May, and we’re still wearing flannel and long pants…and keeping the gloves within reach! Maybe a break in the action will bring in some warmer weather. 🤞The Café and Stand will be closed until next Thursday, June 4th, when the doors will reopen from 11:00- 2:00.

👉Remember that we will be hosting a representative from FarmShare this coming Monday, June 1st, from 10:00- 2:00, to help seniors sign up for the 2026 FarmShare season. If you have Internet access, sign up can also be completed on the Maine Senior Farmshare Program website.

Basil…it’s not just for pesto!
We have lots of healthy basil seedlings for sale in the hope that you will discover many uses for this versatile herb. Basil adds a pop of color and elevated flavor to even simple recipes. It’s the perfect “unfussy” herb that’s easy to grow in a container, and with regular pruning, can provide an abundance of flavorful leaves all season. Just provide your seedlings with well-drained soil, 6- 8 hours of sunlight, and mindful watering (because nothing likes to stand with wet feet). We currently have small pots of basil for $3.99, and slightly larger pots for $5.99. It’s a small investment that can yield a great payback in flavor.

This is the time of year when an overnight frost could nip the young seedlings in the field so hard that the little plants will die. We’re ready, however, to combat those planting-withering temperatures. If you look beyond the farm’s pond, you’ll see that some of our fields are covered by hundreds of feet of white Reemay. This spun polyester acts like a gigantic blanket to protect the tender seedlings snuggled beneath it from frost’s bitter bite. Closer to the Stand, our blossoming strawberry plants can be protected by a shower of protective water that will ward off the chills of a “killer” frost. Our irrigation system is in place and ready, should the threat of frost become real. We’re truly in Boy Scout mode…”Be prepared.”...with a few crossed fingers for good measure.

2026 is the International Year of the Woman Farmer. According to the 2022 census, women make up 43% of Maine’s agricultural producers, exceeding the national average. We’re proud to have a strong presence of women farmers at Stutzman’s, with Rainie Stutzman leading the group.
Rainie has been working this farm as an equal owner and partner with her husband, Sid, since they bought it from his father in 1979. Rainie’s days begin before dawn and end long after the sun sets– nurturing seedlings in the greenhouse, planting and tending crops, keeping night watch during frost warnings, harvesting the produce (she’s a powerhouse corn picker!)...the list is endless. And this list doesn’t even include her work in Café– making her artisan breads, tending the brick oven, and making pizza.

One of our farm’s mainstays is Wendy, who can be found in the fields from the first planting through the last harvest. She greets the sun as it rises, and works hard all day– through withering heat, rain, high winds, and chilling cold. On weekends, our patrons might see her bustling around the Café, helping out during the peak hours too. Wendy meets the farm's challenges with gusto, and gains satisfaction from her hard work.

Rainie and Sid’s granddaughters, Iris and Ayla, were in the fields before they could walk, learning the ways of farming alongside their grandparents. Iris napped in a carrier on Rainie’s back as she worked; Ayla learned to steady her first steps between the rows of veggies. Both girls toddled behind Rainie and Sid, playing in the fields and gaining a love for farming. It wasn’t long before Iris and Ayla were contributing as hardworking farmers during their school vacations, and becoming essential workers in the Farm Stand and Café.

Nancy can usually be found in the Café and Stand, managing the chaos with a knowledgeable (and cheeky) hand, but her farming background makes her advice and help down in the fields invaluable. Her banter with customers is delightful, but her deep roots as a woman farmer are a big key to the farm’s success.

We’re very proud to honor Stutzman’s women farmers, and thank them…and all the women farmers of our area…for their dedication and hard work. Help us celebrate the 2026 International Year of the Women Farmer!

Memorial Day– it’s not about holiday sales, opening camp, and having barbecues. The last Monday of May is dedicated to honoring U. S. military personnel who have died while serving our country.
We are very thankful for those who have sacrificed everything to protect our freedoms.

We’ll see you when we reopen our doors on Thursday, 11-2. Enjoy your family and stay safe.
