Frannie’s Mini Donuts Plans Community Baking Classes with Grant Funding https://buff.ly/nu07tBA Jeff Hanselmann at a bread making class in Italy where the idea for offering local classes was formed. Photo: Courtesy

Frannie’s Mini Donuts in downtown Sanford has received a $20,000 Amex Shop Small grant from American Express and Main Street America.

Known for its scratch-made mini donuts, breakfast sandwiches served on homemade bread, specialty espresso drinks, and welcoming community gathering space, Frannie’s continues to grow its mission of bringing people together through food and connection.

The bakery, operated by the Hanselmann family at 913 Main St., plans to use the funding to purchase the equipment and supplies needed to launch community bread-baking classes designed to teach neighbors how to bake bread at home for their families, friends, and neighbors. Participants will leave with both the knowledge and the tools necessary to continue baking independently.

Beyond the classroom, Frannie’s hopes to foster lasting community connections through bread making. Class alumni will stay connected through social media to share challenges, successes, recipes, and encouragement. Participants will also have opportunities to reunite for community baking events benefiting local food pantries, helping strengthen relationships and nourish neighbors through the shared experience of baking bread together.

Community members interested in participating in a class are encouraged to follow Frannie’s Mini Donuts on Facebook and Instagram, where class sign-ups and additional details will be announced in the coming weeks. Information will also be available soon at buff.ly/j1lkMpa (http://buff.ly/j1lkMpa).

For those who would rather enjoy the finished products than bake them, Frannie’s welcomes customers to stop by the shop at 913 Main St. in Sanford, open Thursday through Sunday from 7am to 12pm.

The Amex Shop Small Grant program was launched through a partnership between American Express and Main Street America to support small businesses across the country. This year, more than 500 businesses received grants through the program.

Jennifer Skyler, chief corporate affairs officer for American Express, said the program is intended to support small businesses and their role in local communities. Erin Barnes, president and CEO of Main Street America, said the grants are designed to help small businesses expand operations, invest in improvements, and develop new offerings.

My family lives out of state. Ever since my sister tried Frannie's Mini Donuts, it is required that I bring them to every gathering. If you haven't tried them yet, what are you even doing? Do you have no whimsy?!

BIG NEWS: When you visit the shop this weekend you might notice a large oven weirdly sitting under our menu boards... it's there because it is heavy as heck (and Jeff needs to recruit some help to move it out back where it will live....)

It is also there because WE ARE A RECIPIENT of the Amex Shop Small Grants Program, thanks to American Express and Main Street America that made it possible for us to buy it!

This grant is more than just funding; it’s an investment in our ability to grow, innovate, and continue showing up for our community in meaningful ways - which has always been important to us!

This grant will help us offer new community BREAD MAKING classes. Teaching folks how easy it is to make amazing, simple, affordable bread for their family, their neighbors, and their community! Classes will include some key bread making supplies for you to take home, delicious recipes, support for bread making challenges you encounter through a Class Alumni FB Group, and a chance to make new friends and build your community. We will also be holding bread making events to help supply local food pantries like the Sanford Backpack Program.

We’re proud to be part of this initiative, and to join a network of over 500 small businesses across the country — made possible by investments like this grant that empower small businesses to keep moving forward.

Such a fun weekend coming up! Visit us for a specialty coffee drink, breakfast sandwich and fresh donuts then be sure to pop over to the Sanford Farmers' Market Maine for your seedlings, fresh produce, baked goods (we are OK sharing your love for baked goods with folks like Sarah’s Table LLC and The Humble Loaf) and so much more. For Lunch go check out our Food Truck Friends at The Hangar Food Truck Park for their opening day festivities (with $30 Helicopter Rides available and other activities!).
