Thanksgiving Day is my favorite holiday, because we gather to share a meal and be grateful for all that we have. My favorite memories of Thanksgiving are when we literally went over the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house for a wonderful meal and lots of love.
Grandma could somehow dirty every single pot, pan and dish in her kitchen on Thanksgiving, and we knew those dishes were all ours after dinner. It didn’t matter one bit, because we were together.
When she greeted us at the door, the steamy aroma of stuffing and turkey and sage wafted around us while we got our hugs. There was so much humidity the windows in the whole house steamed up…she had baked all day Wednesday, and the smells were amazing!
This retirement house of theirs was a fraction of the size of the Jeddo house, but it was so cozy. I always shared the piano bench with my cousin Jonathan, and we loaded up on Grandmas scrumptious homemade dinner rolls, while listening to Uncle Larry tell stories and jokes, and Mom and Dad laughing. Grandma always seemed content to just watch us all enjoy the meal, and didn’t seem to eat much. Kim was a great hostess in training, and led the cleanup afterward. When we came back to the dining room to get pie, it was the best moment of the day! The Kitchen Aid mixer had whipped up a quart of Londons whipping cream to top those awesome pumpkin pies. By now, Grandpa, Dad, Mom and Uncle Larry were discussing Wall Street Journal articles or something cool from The Smithsonian magazine, and Grandma was clasping her hands together and holding them toward her heart as the grandkids brought in the pies and dessert plates and we all felt this overwhelming love and warmth and gratitude.
May each of you reading this enjoy the day with your family and friends. Happy Thanksgiving!!
