Arizmendi San Rafael Bakery & Pizzeria We are a worker-owned bakery, cafe, and pizzeria! Open every day (except every third Monday). Each bakery is a cooperative owned by its crew of artisan bakers.

Welcome to Arizmendi San Rafael, your worker-owned neighborhood cafe. We are here to enhance the lives of our customers, empower workers, and foster sustainable business in our community. All of our artisan crafted baked goods are prepared from scratch with joy and care. We proudly bake organic breads, morning pastries, cookies, seasonal pizza and serve freshly brewed locally roasted coffee. It is

our mission to share our love of baking with you in the most delicious, affordable, and nourishing way possible. Berkeley's gourmet institution, the Cheese Board, is the model and inspiration for our products and our way of doing business. The Cheese Board is a founding member of the Arizmendi Association, which also includes five bakeries, all dedicated to serving our communities top-quality products and creating locally-rooted jobs. Our pizza recipes come from the Cheese Board, other Arizmendi bakeries, and our very own bakers which have won numerous awards for their thin sourdough crust and distinctive topping combinations. We offer a single style of pizza each day based on matching seasonal vegetables, gourmet cheeses and seasonings. In addition, we are now also offering cheese pizza daily made from our housemade tomato sauce, Mozzarella, and organic thin sourdough crust. We offer daily pizzas hot or light-baked for you to finish baking at home. Our sources
We serve award-winning Equator Coffees and Teas, roasted right here in San Rafael. Equator is committed to ecological sustainability and fair pricing throughout the supply chain. We use Strauss Creamery and Humbolt Creamery for all our coffee drinks. Our eggs are harvested on cage-free Glaum Ranch outside of Santa Cruz. Most of our breads and pizza base are made with organic wheat flour. The original, decades-rich Cheese Board sourdough starter lives on in our kitchen and gives our breads and pizza their distinctive and beloved flavor.

To our lovely and loyal customers and the San Rafael community:
It is with heavy hearts and to much disappointment that Arizmendi San Rafael regrets to announce that after 14 years of service, we will unfortunately not be reopening our San Rafael location. Despite our strongest efforts and countless hours of hard work to make our relocation successful, the bakery ultimately faced too many unforeseen challenges, leading our dedicated members to the difficult acceptance that the bakery would not be able to reopen.
Over the past months, the bakery diligently explored all potential avenues and resources available to us in hopes of overcoming the mounting obstacles that stood in our way. Despite our best intentions and efforts, the challenges proved to be insurmountable, leading to the realization that the project has become infeasible.
While this decision was not made lightly, our dedicated members want to express our hopes for understanding and continued support during this disappointing and difficult time.
The Arizmendi San Rafael/4th st. team want to express our never-ending gratitude to our loyal customers and community for all of the unwavering support throughout the years. We have been truly touched by the outpouring of love and interest and encouragement that you all have shown us- not only during this difficult process over the last year, but over the last 14 years together. It has been an incredibly unpredictable journey, and we are grateful for each and every one of you who have been a part of this experience with us. We are grateful for the memories, friendships, and connections that were formed during our time here in San Rafael and wish for continued success and happiness to all.
Although the San Rafael locations doors will be permanently closed, we do invite all of our die-hard and dedicated patrons to visit any of our sister bakeries located in: San Franciso[9th and Valencia], Oakland[Lakeshore], Emeryville[San Pablo Ave.], and Berkeley[Cheeseboard; Shattuck Ave.]).

Many of you may have received our email announcement, but for those who have not:
Dear customers,
As of late, we’ve received a lot of messages of support and expressions of eagerness for us to reopen. We want to let you know how much we genuinely appreciate these messages and give you an update on where we’re currently at.

Despite the lack of many obvious signs of activity at our new location at 1139 4th Street, we have been hard at work the past months getting our architectural drawings in order, preparing to apply for permits and reaching out to general contractors. Unfortunately, it’s become clear that the costs associated with building out a new location in San Rafael have grown exponentially since the last time Arizmendi launched a project of this scale, and at this point we’re facing some hard questions about the viability of reopening in the manner that we originally envisioned.

We’ve valued being a member of the San Rafael community over the past decade and a half, and we know how much Arizmendi means to many folks in Marin; not just as a bakery, but as a place for community and as an example that, as long-time Bay Area cooperator Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff puts it, other avenues are possible in world that seems hell-bent on pursuing a path of hate, greed and destruction. Because of that, we feel we owe it to you to be transparent about the challenges we’re facing and to open a dialogue about the options that are available to us at this point.

If you have any ideas, feedback, or offers of assistance with regard to our re-opening, we invite you to share them with us via email (or direct message if you follow us on social media). If there’s enough interest, we’d also be happy to meet with members of the community sometime in the coming weeks to brainstorm ideas for how Arizmendi can remain a member of the San Rafael community.

Hello, lovely people of Marin County! We are posting this to let you know that as of Sunday, September 3rd, our location on 1002 Court Street in downtown San Rafael will be closing temporarily.

We will not be sharing the location of our new space until we get more bureaucracy out of the way, but we look forward to sharing that information with you all as soon as we have things locked down!

Be on the lookout for update posts and behind the scenes of our planned build out once we get started!

In the meantime our bakers will be working at our lovely mother/sister bakeries: .9thave

Please support them, and us during this transition period! We look forward to our grand reopening and serving the people of Marin County and San Rafael once more! Appreciate you all, so much!
