(1988)

The founder, Tony Peters, was born into a poor Portuguese family in San Jose in 1907. When he started grammar school, he couldn't speak English. Peters worked for Studebaker during the week, then spent the weekends in San Francisco with his Uncle who owned a bakery there. He learned the business at his uncle's store on Saturdays. On April 15th, 1936, he opened Peters' Bakery at Delmas and San Carl

os Streets. Two years later, he opened a second bakery, on Alum Rock Avenue just east of White Road. He sold the downtown shop in 1947 to one of his apprentices, Richard Sota, which became Dicks Bakery. His abiding interest was his bakery. For decades, he arrived in the middle of the night to begin the days baking. He always used the best quality ingredients it was something he had to do to fulfill his philosophy. That philosophy was, "If you don't want to eat it yourself, don't sell it." Over the years, Tony Peters trained more than 100 bakers many of whom went on to establish their own bakeries. He had a phenomenal retention rate for employees, all of whom called him simply Boss. Tony Peters has since passed on but his San Jose legacy remains. Peters Bakery, now owned and operated by two of Tony's grandchildren, is the oldest family owned bakery in the Silicon Valley.

We just finished setting out a couple of the celebration cakes for the Class of 2026. If you know, you know exactly why we still do things the old-fashioned way. We mix the batter from scratch, and we make sure the frosting is thick, rich, and smooth before it ever hits the our customers.

People in the neighborhood have trusted us with their family milestones for decades because we don't take shortcuts on flavor. A graduation is a big deal, and the dessert on the table should taste just as good as it looks.

We have plenty of open slots in our baking schedule this week, so there is no rush. Whether your graduate wants the classic school colors or something personal, we're happy to sit down and help you design the perfect cake.

Stop by the shop or call us whenever you're ready. We'll make sure your family gets exactly what they need.

Thanks, neighbors.

Mother's Day is coming up. We're getting the heart-shaped burnt almond cakes ready. Folks ask for these every year.

You can choose white, chocolate, or marble for the inside. We wrap the whole thing in our signature burnt almond coating and add some pastel rosettes. It is a 9 inch single layer. It's a simple way to show Mom you're thinking of her.

We're taking orders now at the shop. Stop by or give us a ring before we're all set for the weekend. We don't want anyone missing out.

Thanks, neighbors.

We are deeply relieved to learn of the recent arrest regarding the incident that occurred in our community last December. This situation has always been about much more than a single small business or a specific individual; it is about the fundamental safety of every community member, patron, and neighbor who shares our public spaces. Violence directed at anyone in our community is unacceptable, and everyone deserves to feel secure going about their daily lives.

Once again, the San Jose Police Department has gone above and beyond to protect our community, just as they did following the armed assault here in 2022. We are incredibly grateful for their unwavering dedication, thorough investigation, and the out-of-state coordination that made this arrest possible.

Our deepest hope now is that the District Attorney's office and the judges will do their part in the next steps of this process. It is crucial for the safety of our entire community that individuals who commit acts of violence are held fully accountable, and that they are not simply released back into the populace.

We thank the community for its continued support and remain committed to fostering a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.

We are making room for all the flour we'll need this weekend. It’s going to be a long Saturday morning in the bakery to get everything ready.

We’re taking orders for Saturday now so we know exactly how many to slide into the oven that morning. There is nothing like a fruit pie that is still a little warm when you pick it up.

We will have apple, cherry, berry, and many others coming out of the heat by 7 AM on the 14th. Stop by the store, give us a ring, or place an order online if you want us to set one aside for you.

Send this to the neighbor who is always first in line when the pies are fresh.

Our 90th anniversary shirts are ready. Swipe to check it out.

- Local San Jose resident Prince Salamat did the art. You can find him at Check out his stuff. Not only did they capture the legacy of the old storefront, but they captured the heart of Alum Rock Ave, the Hills, the Burnt Almond Cake, and our grandfather, Tony Peters.

- Shine on Shirts handled the printing. They are another San Jose staple. Been around 50 years. We like supporting local folks who do good work. Give some love.

We have a limited supply. Come grab one while we still have your size. Only $20

Let us know your thoughts on the design.
Hope to see you soon.

I have definitely seen some exciting things at the bakery, even recently as we all know. But today I was running an errand for the bakery and saw a truck lose its trailer right in the middle of traffic on 87. It careened off into the right lane.

Luck was on their side. No rain, missed all vehicles, and it happened right in front of a Sheriff's patrol car.

I do a lot of towing myself. Seeing those safety chains still dangling from the truck just reinforces the need for safety.

Maybe the chain snapped from the force of the drag? What do you think happened?

Check your gear before you head out, neighbors. Glad no one was hurt.

The 9-inch hearts are back for Valentine's Day.

You folks can pick a single or a double layer. Choice of three flavors: our Burnt Almond, the Shirley Special, or Chocolate Fudge.

The Burnt Almond has that toasted crunch on the sides, and the fudge is as thick as ever.

Send this to your husband if he’s the type to wait until the last minute.

Save it for when you're making your list.

Peters' Bakery and Mark's Hot Dogs have been neighbors in East San Jose since 1936. We're standing together because community has to be more than just a word. If local shops don't support each other, we'll fail. We'll lose the history that makes San Jose home.

From our burnt almond cake to the snap of a hot dog, these flavors are about family and hard work. We're neighbors on Alum Rock Avenue. You might be picking up a pink box for a family gathering. Or you're getting a chili dog at that historic orange landmark. You aren't just a customer. You're the ones keeping this legacy alive.

Community supporting community. Always

We won Gold again. ⭐️

That makes six awards for us now. Six Golds and one Silver since 2019.

We have been in this community since 1936. We do not do this for the accolades.. We do it for the neighbors who keep coming back for their morning rolls.

We are just happy to be part of your celebrations. Thanks for sticking with us all these years.

The ovens are on. The burnt almond cakes are cooling on the rack right now.

Stop by and say hello. 🏆
