Kara is excited that the focus of her business is not simply the delectable cupcakes she creates, but also the local producers who supply her the necessary ingredients. She is proud to prominently display a comprehensive list of ingredients in her bakery. Co- located with this list is a map of the San Francisco bay area, showing the name and source for each item. Some of these ingredients, includi
ng the salt, are actually produced in the bay. Others, including her brands of flour and dairy have been available to discriminating chefs in the Bay Area since the early 1900βs. Most important for Kara is the quality. By buying local goods she is sourcing the freshest ingredients possible. It also allows her to build relationships with the actual people who make many of these items. In addition, by buying local goods, we contribute to a business model which emits significantly less carbon dioxide to the environment. Dairy coming across the bridge from the bucolic farms of Petaluma is not only the best available, but, we think, better for our planet than dairy trucked in from out of state. Born out of this sustainable model, Kara has built a business which is conscious of bigger social issues of our city. We are proud to donate cupcakes each day to local charitable organizations, and focus our giving to the truly needy. In 2007 we donated over thirty thousands cupcakes, mostly to shelters and senior centers in San Francisco.
