Benkyodo Traditional hand-made Japanese manju, mochi, and more! When the family was interned during World War II, Benkyodo Company was forced to close temporarily.

In 1906, Suyeichi Okamura opened Benkyodo Company - one of the original businesses in Japantown - on San Francisco's Geary Boulevard. After the war ended, the shop reopened, and in 1951 Suyeichi's son, Hirofumi, took over. In 1959, the shop moved to its present-day location at Sutter and Buchanan Street. In 1990, Hirofumi passed the shop to his sons, Ricky and Bobby. Continuing a family legacy, th

e two brothers still own and operate the business, bringing the sweet confections - and smiles - to customers daily.

Hello Friends. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will not be accepting New Year's mochi orders this year. However, the store will be open 12/26 through 12/31. We'll have a limited assortment of manju and New Year's mochi for walk-in purchase during this time.

COVID-19 Reopening Update

We are pleased to announce that Benkyodo will re-open on Tuesday, June 2, 2020. The store will be abiding by social distancing and facial covering guidelines.

Our new temporary hours until further notice are:

Tuesday - Saturday
9am - 4pm (or until sold out)

Limited assortment available daily. Strawberry, blueberry, and mango mochi will be available in limited quantities.

We highly recommend pre-ordering by phone. We are not accepting email orders. No credit cards accepted, cash only.
