I am sure there are some of you out there missing my cake posts. If you're wondering why I've been MIA, it's because I am nursing an injured leg. The required rest has consequently resulted in me being away from all the butter and sugar magic.
But you know how when you're so deeply vested in your passion, and you miss it terribly, the whole universe conspires to pull you right back?! That is exactly how I found myself in a Christmas fruit bakeoff hosted by Kitchen Kemistry by Cheryl R
If I thought all that I was going to get out of this experience was a recipe and some tips to achieving a perfect cake; I was unequivocally proven wrong. Cheryl, being the seasoned and zealous mentor she is, took us through the complete A to Z of Christmas Fruitcake.
She organized a meticulous schedule, started us off with the dry fruit soak, then lead us through the spice mix recipe and preparing the ingredients, and finally guided us through the entire baking process. What was exhilarating about this experience was the immense wealth of knowledge she shared with us about the history of fruitcakes and the science behind the ingredients used, and instilled in me the yearning to learn more about the why and what, instead of simply focussing on the how.
I am definitely coming out of this bake-off with more than just a recipe to protect through the ages; I now understand excitement of collaborating virtually across the globe with like-minded individuals, what it takes to be an organizer and a leader, and finally how to seek intellectually for more in a bake.
All this said, here are some pictures from behind the scenes. I am still waiting for the cakes to baste and cure, which I have to admit, take intense levels of patience. But this year for Christmas, I'm going to have a sweet, boozy gift, and I can't wait!!!
Thanks again Cheryl!
PS : This is not a recipe post.
