Friends, we have some hard news that Groundswell will not be reopening after our fire. Financially, we just cannot make it work. We have loved being a part of your special and ordinary moments over the last 16 years. It has been an honor and a joy.

At the same time, we know this moment is about something much more important in our community. If you’re feeling a need for some extra care and connection, we are right there with you. So in that spirit, we have one final invitation: please stop by the shop tomorrow (Friday), any time between 8am and 11am. I will be at the front door with free vegan banana bread (while it lasts), and a hug if you’d like.

We’re also looking forward to supporting the next locally-owned small business to bring something new to this corner, and we are anticipating some exciting news on that in late spring. We will post information about it here once we have it so you can join us in giving them a warm Hamline-Midway welcome.

An update post our Wednesday night fire:

We are beyond grateful for the love and support from all of you. Truly, it has blown us away. There are many reasons we love this community and neighborhood, and you all are certainly reminding us of them these days.

We have started the slow process of assessing damage, taking inventory, and talking with insurance. It’s going to be a long haul, but we will keep you updated as we know more.

In the meantime, the Go Fund Me our neighbors set up is incredibly helpful. We got some good news we have insurance coverage for our staff for a time, but it’s going to take awhile to sort out insurance to get that dispersed to them and these donations will help cover that gap. All of the money is going to go directly to the staff.

It was a surreal and pretty awful night watching our beloved business on fire. Thank you to the St Paul fire department for their incredible work. And thank you to our dear neighbor Paul for giving me a big, long hug. Everyone is safe, and that is what matters most.

Really sad to say we won’t be able to serve you your latte and scone tomorrow. We will keep you posted as we learn more.
