Cleo’s Donuts is named after Cleo because this place is built on the life he lived.
In 1957, Cleo boarded a bus from Arkansas to Illinois, chasing the chance at a better life than the cotton fields could ever offer him. He often said it was one of the best decisions he ever made. What followed was a lifetime defined by hard work and pride in doing things the right way.
Cleo spent years working in local bakeries, including Stevens Bakery, Starns Bakery, Eisener Bakery, and Paxton Bakery. When one job wasn’t enough he took on another in roofing and building, helping shape the community he now called home. He worked 26 years at Central Foundry, retired, and quickly realized he didn't like not working as much as he thought he would. He returned to baking at County Market, as pictured below. He then spent decades serving Oakwood School District, quietly caring for spaces where others learned and grew in.
Cleo never chased recognition. He believed in honest work, consistency, and taking care of people. That spirit lives on here.
Every donut we make is a nod to early mornings and the belief that good food, made with care, can bring people together. Cleo’s Donuts isn’t just about donuts. It’s about showing up, giving back, and honoring the kind of work that builds a life.
We appreciate your patience and support as we continue making progress toward opening Cleo’s Donuts!
