CMTA President & CEO Lance Hastings joined ABC10 to discuss growing manufacturers’ concerns over Governor Newsom’s proposed tax increases on software services and new limits on business tax credits.

Manufacturers rely on software across nearly every part of their operations—from internal systems to business-to-business transactions. These proposed changes would increase costs across the economy at a time when affordability should be the focus.

CMTA will continue sounding the alarm on policies that make it harder to manufacture in California.

Thank you to Senator Archuleta for championing SB 1059 to modernize the Employment Training Panel, support employee training, and strengthen workforce development.

Better-trained employees mean a stronger manufacturing workforce with more good-paying jobs. SB 1059 helps keep California manufacturing competitive!

SB 954 would reverse California’s progress in advanced manufacturing by adding regulatory burdens that slow investment, increase costs, and limit facility expansions and modernization.

CMTA is urging lawmakers to keep California moving forward, not backward, and vote NO on SB 954. ❌

This Memorial Day, CMTA honors the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

We honor their courage and selflessness as a reminder of the values that strengthen our communities, our workforce, and our nation.

California leads the nation in manufacturing, and maintaining that leadership requires policies that encourage investment and growth. That is why the Legislature and Governor Newsom rightly created a CEQA exemption to help accelerate advanced manufacturing projects.

Unfortunately, SB 954 would effectively gut that exemption by imposing complex approvals and unattainable conditions on advanced manufacturing projects, leaving virtually no projects eligible for CEQA streamlining.

This is not just about large manufacturing facilities. Supply chain entities would also be excluded, as would expansions and renovations to existing manufacturing sites, even when those projects are designed to upgrade equipment and processes to meet California’s climate, energy, and environmental goals.

Given California's efforts to lead in manufacturing innovation and environmental progress, this policy doesn't make sense. It will drive up costs, slow project timelines, and discourage investment in the state.

CMTA encourages lawmakers to say NO to SB 954 and protect California's leadership in advanced manufacturing.
