July's charity of the month was Oceana, which received nearly $600 from Homespun Bagel proceeds! Oceana campaigns to win policy victories that restore abundance and biodiversity in the world’s oceans.

Hello all! I've decided to begin donating 30% of all proceeds (yes, proceeds) to non-profits. At the beginning of each month, I will pick a cause, such as endangered species, climate change, the war in Ukraine, international women, animal welfare, etc., and ask folks to recommend a charity. At the end of the month, I will select one to receive the donation, and create a post letting you know about the charity. Suggested charities should be secular and relatively non-controversial, as well as reputable and effective.

This month, given the hellish weather planet-wide and the short notice, I've picked both topic and charity: climate change and Oceana. I'll provide the details at the end of the month.

At the beginning of August, I'll announce the next topic and invite you to leave your suggestions in the comments. This is a trial run. If there is not a lot of interest/feedback, I'll just pick a charity and make a post about the donation at month end. I hope, however, we can use this as a platform to lift spirits in this challenging time and learn about efforts to better the world for all, both human and non-human alike.

I've been considering a price increase for a while now, but have been hesitant knowing that bagels are a bit of splurge for some folks. However, my costs have been increasing steadily over the past year, from flour to bags and labels. Perhaps most importantly, Melvin feels strongly that he is due for a cost-of-living adjustment, and that's a tough one to argue with.

Today kicks off Black History Month! There are numerous local events for everyone, from kids to adults, including music, art, theater, poetry, comedy, and more. You can find a number of local events listed here: https://www.eventbrite.com/d/ca--sacramento/black-history-month/?page=1.

Other events include a Black Expo at Cal Expo, exhibits at the Crocker Art Museum, as well as a number of events at our public libraries. It's a great opportunity to learn more about Black history and the Black experience.

I have the best customers ever! I appreciate your kind words and especially your patience and understanding. To my newer customers, I am usually darn reliable!

I returned home late on Saturday, and have since been resting, reading, playing catch-up, and in general practicing better self-care. Today, I will be updating last weekend's orders, so those of you with postponed orders will be receiving an email with a revised order confirmation.

There may be room for additional orders this coming weekend, and if so I will first contact those of you who ordered for the following weekend to see if you want to move your order up.

I hope you have had the chance to enjoy the lovely crisp, sunny weather we are having! And now....I must get Melvin (and myself) out for a walk!

Just reiterating Melvin's thoughts! Thanks to you all for being so patient. I know I wasn't as responsive to emails during the past week, and apologize for any frustration. For the next week or so, please consider getting your orders in earlier, especially larger ones, as I am still playing a bit of catch-up.
