One of the images that I always think about every year on 9/11 is all the gurneys lined up at St. Vincent Hospital right across the street from my job just 2 miles away from World Trade Center waiting for the survivors that never came. The other is the next day the numerous people that approached me with their missing loved one’s photo asking if I’ve seen them while I stood outside of my job at The James Beard Foundation offering free orange juice to people donating blood at the hospital. I will never forget fighting back tears as I saw the look of anguish in their faces. I will never forget how NYC united and pulled through one of the darkest days of our country’s history. For that I will forever be a proud New Yorker 🗽

As a former James Beard Foundation employee, this is exciting to have a local Tampa Bay Area chef be recognized to possibly receive one of the highest honors in the culinary world. This take me back to the fun days of planning the JB awards.👩🏻‍🍳

Michelin stars are all the rage, but Tampa’s culinary scene has something new to celebrate this week.

Bryce Bonsack, chef at Michelin-starred Tampa Heights Italian restaurant Rocca, is among the nominees in the 2026 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards—with winners to be announced on June 15 during a ceremony in Chicago.

Bonsack, who is also involved at South Tampa’s Bar Terroir, is one of six finalists in the running for “Best Chef: South.”
