NEWS from S.O.D.A.: Marymoor Blue Heron Colony "Nesting Area" - Important Info!

HAVE YOU NOTICED? The Great Blue Heron have returned to the Marymoor Dog Park nesting colony or “heronry” for the third year and are preparing nests for their 2014 babies. The heron continue to bring in branches and twigs to construct nests in the tallest cottonwood trees. Some heron may have already laid eggs and we expect to see and hear “babies” squawking in the nests by May. On Saturday, April 5, fencing will be erected to close the area around the “heronry” in preparation for the babies arrival. The nests will be home to the babies for 65-90 days while they are nurtured by their parents, grow into adults and then fly away. The “heronry” area will be temporarily fenced-off to keep people and dogs from getting too close. The area will remain closed until nesting is complete in July.

YOU ARE INVITED for a CLOSE-UP LOOK! The Eastside Audubon Society will be bringing their “viewing scopes” to the Marymoor Dog Park on the first Saturday of every month (April 5, May 3, June 7 & July 5) from 9am to 11am and invite YOU to take some close-up looks at the Great Blue Herons of Marymoor Park through their scopes. Audubon members will be there to answer any questions you might have. Expect an increased number of “bird viewers” to be in the area during these FREE viewing sessions. Note: Heavy rain will cancel the viewing sessions!
