3 things I wish someone told me when I thought my milk supply was “too low” 👇🏾
1️⃣ Pump output is not a perfect measure of milk supply.
Some moms respond really well to a pump and some don’t. Fl**ge size, stress, sleep deprivation, hormone shifts, and even the time of day can all affect output. I’ve worked with moms producing plenty of milk who still struggled to pump large amounts.
2️⃣ Milk supply is heavily based on milk removal.
Milk production works on supply and demand. If milk isn’t being effectively removed through nursing or pumping, your body gets the signal to make less. That’s why latch, fl**ge fit, feeding frequency, and breast drainage matter so much.
3️⃣ Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both mom and baby.
Most moms are discharged from the hospital with very little actual breastfeeding education. And then they’re expected to troubleshoot latch issues, pumping schedules, cluster feeding, and supply concerns on their own. That’s a huge gap.
I’m Krystal 👋🏾 - a registered nurse, IBCLC, and breastfeeding mom. And this is exactly the kind of thing I help moms troubleshoot every single day.
Save this for the next time you start questioning whether your body is doing enough. 💜
