It’s the debate that’s sparked more arguments in our roastery than who left the lights on: Does dark roast actually have more caffeine?
After thirty-some years of roasting, it’s time to settle the score. The truth is, caffeine is a tough molecule—it doesn't just "cook out" in the roaster. The winner actually depends on how you measure your coffee at 7:00 AM:
The "Scooper" (By Volume): Light roast wins. The beans are denser and smaller with more water weight, so you fit more of them into that scoop. More beans = more caffeine.
The "Scale Artist" (By Weight): Dark roast wins. These beans are puffed up and light, so it takes more of them to hit your 20-gram target.
At the end of the day, picking a roast for the caffeine is like picking a car for the floor mats. Just choose for the flavor, man. Go Light for those bright, citrusy notes. Go Dark for that deep, chocolatey "campfire" soul. We’ve spent decades perfecting both, so you really can’t go wrong.
