As there have been some recent concerns brought to us regarding feral cats in town, we've gathered some information on what the protocol is in dealing with them:

The Town follows the County’s Animal Control Ordinance as is stated in the Town Code Section 4.1, Animal control.
“The Town Commissioners of the Town of Queenstown for the purpose of Animal Control have adopted the Animal Control Ordinance of Queen Anne’s County. The penalties for violation
of the Animal Control Ordinance shall be as specified in the County Ordinance.”

The QA County Ordinance 21-11 amended Chapter 9 of the QA County Code to clarify procedures regarding community cats (free roaming cats who may or may not be feral and who may or may not be cared for by residents of the immediate area).
The ordinance clarifies that community cats are exempted from County provisions on stray/unwanted animals, animal registration, animals at large, public nuisance animals, and abandonment.
Generally speaking, wild or feral cats are not treated the same way as other domestic at-large animals. Queen Anne's County Animal Control does not pick up, permanently remove, or house feral or community cats from private property.

The Ordinance also establishes County policy of “Trap-Neuter-Return” when dealing with community cats. The County’s T-N-R Service page can be found here: https://www.qac.org/1576/TNR---Trap-Neuter-Release-Service
The County’s Trap-Neuter-Return policy states that residents who have community cats on their property may trap them using humaine traps (which the county will rent to you for a $25 deposit/fee if you don’t have one) and make an appointment to bring them into Animal Services for free sterilization surgery and vaccinations, after which they will have their ear tipped to identify them as sterile, and will then be returned to the location where they were originally trapped.
Otherwise, cats will only be accepted by QAC Animal Control Services if a cat is:
• Under four months of age.
• Severely injured and requires medical intervention.

The County does offer this link, https://www.qac.org/248/Wildlife-Control-Management of private wildlife control services available in the area, a few of which will trap feral cats. NOTE: service is only to trap cats for residents for the purpose of entering the T-N-R program, they will not permanently remove cats from properties.

The non-profit group www.savingfutureferalcats.org also operates in Queen Anne’s County and can assist residents with trapping cats for the T-N-R program and provides rehabilitation and re-homing for cats deemed unable to be released.

Saving Future Feral Cats works for the welfare of stray felines. Rehabilitating feral cats to get into loving homes is what we do in Stevensville, MD.
