Hi there! I just finished reading the 2nd of the 4 back issues that C&W sent me. You would think having a few weeks off before beginning a new job would mean I've been able to catch up on all those little projects. Nope. I find I'm more productive when I keep busy. But still, I'll try to get through the next one faster!
The issue from the summer of 2013 told stories of some women who were badass before they even had a right to be. Some hid contraband in their hoopskirts, others used their acting skills to be employed as spies, while others posed as men to join the military. But I think my favorite "Hoopskirts and Counterintelligence" story is of Elizabeth "Crazy Bet" VanLew, who used her entire family inheritance to purchase and set free her family's slaves along with their families.
The other story that spoke to me was that of a photographer, who partnered with a long-time bridal shop owner, to provide and photograph weddings in Haiti. Most Haitian couples never legally marry as the expense of a ceremony is too much for them. This trip allowed some couples, who have been together for 25 years and have many children together, to finally have their love documented.
This issue also gives tips on how to update your resume, fashion ideas, cake (and whiskey cocktail) recipes, as well as why it's okay to not be a "perfect" mom all the time.
So far I am loving this magazine.
Let me know if you'd like your own subscription. And it's about time to start planning our first HobNob, so be on the lookout for details!
Cheers!
