All of the vendors are set up on Market Street with some AMAZING things! It’s been a little quieter than our normal Tuesday, so come take a stroll, shop local, support these wonderful vendors and then stop in to see us! ❤️

September 1st means one thing around here… BRING ON THE PUMPKIN EVERYTHING. And y’all, we are absolutely LOADED DOWN today. Robert has been busy, and there are SO many new fall treats in the case!

🌙 NEW Harvest Moon Cookies — our beloved dark, chewy fruit bar dough topped with homemade pumpkin icing and a dusting of pumpkin spice. If you love our fruit bars, you NEED to try this one.

We were so thankful to be trusted with this large corporate order for Oklo! 🤍

Orders like this are such a fun change of pace for us — and the perfect opportunity to remind everyone that corporate cookies are still VERY much something we do!

While I’ve stepped away from taking detailed custom decorated cookie orders, our printed cookies allow us to create something completely customized for businesses, organizations and events without taking on the hours and hours of hand decorating that traditional customs require.

PLEASE DON’T LET ME REGRET MAKING ALL THIS STUFF. 😂

Y’all have already kept us BUSY this morning… so naturally, instead of being reasonable, I looked at the cases and thought, “You know what? Let’s make MORE.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

🐾 A SWEET SEND-OFF FOR DR. GAIL COUNTS 🐾

We had the absolute honor and privilege of creating these cookies to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Gail Counts! 💕 (back in June 🤦🏻‍♀️.. I’m a little behind.)

After many, many years of caring for Scioto County’s fur babies, Dr. Counts has certainly earned a well-deserved retirement. Her dedication to our community and the countless animals and families she has helped over the years through Shawnee Animal Clinic and Sierra’s Haven have made such an incredible impact.

When you spend your career caring for the four-legged members of our families, your work means more than you probably ever realize. 🐶🐱🐾

Dr. Counts, thank you for the years of compassion, dedication, and love you have given to the animals of our community. We hope retirement brings you plenty of rest, happiness, and time to enjoy whatever comes next — with a few furry friends nearby, of course. ❤️

If you’ve been sleeping on our brownies & Paradise Bars… today’s the day to fix that. 😍

Let’s start with the BROWNIES.

Our classic brownies are made from the original Counts Bakery recipe — chewy, chocolatey, and finished the old-fashioned way with that layer of powdered sugar on the bottom. If you’ve never had one, you are seriously missing out on a little piece of Portsmouth bakery history. 🤎

And then there are our Buckeye Brownies… because apparently a delicious brownie wasn’t enough. Add that creamy peanut butter Buckeye goodness and you’ve got one of our absolute favorites.

But can we talk about the Paradise Bars for a minute?!

If you’ve never tried one, the name pretty much says it all — they’re a little slice of paradise. The bottom reminds me of a rich, gooey pecan pie, then you’ve got chocolate and just a little coconut on top. SO GOOD. If you’re always reaching for the same thing when you come in, consider this your sign to try one today!

And don’t worry, the rest of the case is stocked too! Robert was busy this morning making fresh Diamond Danishes, and we have plenty ready for you along with all your bakery favorites.

Okay, I am WAY behind on sharing decorated cookies… but these were far too special to stay buried in my camera roll. 🤍

Back in May, I had the honor of making these cookies for The Kitchen Collective’s Grand Opening & Block Party celebrating the opening of their new market storefront!

And if you aren’t familiar with The Kitchen Collective and what they’re doing for our community, you absolutely should be.

The Kitchen Collective is a shared commercial kitchen that gives local makers, bakers, cooks and food entrepreneurs a place to start, create, grow and turn an idea into an actual business. How COOL is that?!

Several of the partner products you see on our shelves at the bakery come from businesses that utilize The Kitchen Collective, so we get to see firsthand what can happen when someone is given the space and resources to take that next step. We’re incredibly thankful for their partnership and even more thankful to call them our neighbors.

Julie’s vision for our community is truly something special. She isn’t just creating a kitchen or a market — she’s cultivating this whole little community around food, homemade goods, small businesses and people cheering each other on. And you KNOW that is something I can get behind. 🥹

Small businesses helping small businesses grow. Local products on local shelves. People taking a chance on an idea and having somewhere to begin.

That’s the kind of stuff that makes a community better. 🤍

Buckeye brownie lovers, this one’s for you. 🤎🥜

If you haven’t tried one of our Buckeye Brownies yet… today feels like the day. A rich, fudgy brownie topped with that peanut butter + chocolate combo that Ohioans know just makes everything better. 😍

And don’t worry—we’ve got all your bakery favorites waiting for you too! Donuts, cinnamon rolls, creme horns, cookies, danishes, turnovers and plenty more filling the cases this morning.

🍓 PLUS our new strawberry treats are here!
Our Strawberry Turnovers are filled with strawberry goodness, topped with icing and a sprinkle of freeze-dried strawberries, and our new Strawberry Tarts have milk chocolate chunks mixed into our delicious cream. Basically, we’re squeezing every last bit of strawberry season out before fall takes over. 😂🍓

Today, we’re mourning the passing of America’s Queen, Dolly Parton. 🤍

I’ve always admired Dolly—not only for her talent, but for her faith, her heart, and the incredible businesswoman she was. She lived out something I try to model my own Christian life after every day: love God, love others, and never forget the least of these.

She showed us that you can be wildly successful without losing your kindness. You can stand firm in what you believe while still loving people who believe differently. You can build an empire and spend your life using it to give back.

And as a reader, one of the things I have always thought was coolest about Dolly was her passion for children’s literacy. Growing up here in the Appalachian foothills makes that part of her legacy feel even more special to me. Dolly never forgot where she came from, and through her Imagination Library, she made sure millions upon millions of children—no matter their circumstances—could grow up with books in their homes. The fact that she took something as simple as the love of a book and used it to change generations of children is just incredible to me.

That’s a legacy.

Whether you believe what I believe or not, I hope we all carry a little bit of Dolly’s spirit with us in the coming days.

Do something kind. Love one another. Give when you can. Spread some joy. Make somebody laugh. Leave this world a little better than you found it.

And as heartbroken as I am, I can’t help but smile thinking about the reunion she must be having in Heaven today. With Carl. With the people she loved. And with the Jesus she sang about so beautifully.

We’re here from 7–2 today if you want to come grab a treat, jam to some Dolly, or cry with us. I have a feeling there will be a whole lot of Dolly playing in the bakery today. 🥹🤍

And I’ll leave you with a few words from one of my very favorite Dolly songs:

“He’s alive, he’s alive

Heaven’s gates are open wide…”

Rest easy, Dolly. Thank you for showing us how to dream big, work hard, give generously, love people, put books into the hands of children, and above all else—keep the faith.
