Today’s history lesson: The Seven Churches of Revelation ⛪📖

Did you know that all seven are located in modern-day Türkiye? They were not seven church buildings, but seven early Christian communities addressed in the Book of Revelation:

• Ephesus — near Selçuk
• Smyrna — modern İzmir
• Pergamum — modern Bergama
• Thyatira — modern Akhisar
• Sardis — near Salihli
• Philadelphia — modern Alaşehir
• Laodicea — near Denizli

Written near the end of the first century, the messages praised some communities for their faith while warning others about the challenges they faced. These cities stood along important Roman roads, helping Christianity spread throughout Asia Minor.

Today, visitors can still explore the ancient ruins and walk through a remarkable chapter of early Christian history—right here in Türkiye. 🇹🇷

Today’s history lesson: The Valens Aqueduct! 🇹🇷

Known in Turkish as Bozdoğan Kemeri, this magnificent aqueduct was built in the 4th century during the reign of Roman Emperor Valens. It carried fresh water into Constantinople, supplying the city’s fountains, baths, palaces, and cisterns.

The aqueduct was repaired and reused by both the Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations. More than 1,650 years later, its great stone arches still stand in the heart of modern Istanbul—with traffic passing beneath them every day!

In Istanbul, history is not hidden in a museum. It is part of everyday life. ❤️

🏛️ Today’s history lesson: Hagia Sophia

In the heart of Istanbul stands a building that has watched empires rise and fall for nearly 1,500 years.

Hagia Sophia was built between 532 and 537 during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Its enormous dome was an architectural wonder of its time, and its design later inspired generations of churches and mosques.

Throughout its remarkable history, Hagia Sophia has served as a church, a mosque, and a museum. Every mosaic, column, and stone carries a different chapter of Istanbul’s story.

Hagia Sophia is more than a building—it is where civilizations, religions, art, and history meet beneath one unforgettable dome. 🇹🇷

Today’s history lesson: Did you know one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in the world is located in Türkiye? 🇹🇷🏛️

The magnificent Aspendos Theatre stands in Antalya, near the ancient city of Aspendos. Built during the Roman period nearly 1,900 years ago, it was designed by an architect named Zenon and could welcome approximately 12,000 spectators.

Its enormous stage building, stone seating, and remarkable acoustics have survived through the centuries. Even today, performances can be enjoyed inside this ancient masterpiece—allowing its original purpose to continue long after the Roman Empire disappeared.

But Aspendos is more than its famous theater. The ancient city was among the first in the region to mint coins bearing its own name. It also had an impressive one-kilometer aqueduct system that carried water from the mountains to the city, demonstrating the extraordinary engineering knowledge of the ancient world.

Aspendos reminds us that Türkiye is not simply a place where history happened. It is a land where history is still standing, still speaking, and still welcoming visitors. ☕🇹🇷

📚 Today's History Lesson: Derinkuyu Underground City

Did you know? One of the world's most extraordinary underground cities is hidden beneath the heart of Türkiye.

Derinkuyu Underground City, located in Cappadocia, descends nearly 85 meters (280 feet) below the surface and could shelter an estimated 20,000 people along with their livestock and food supplies.

Originally expanded during the Byzantine era from earlier underground chambers, Derinkuyu was used as a refuge during times of invasion. The city features an incredible network of homes, kitchens, wine cellars, churches, schools, wells, storage rooms, and ventilation shafts—all carved directly into soft volcanic rock.

Massive circular stone doors could be rolled into place from the inside, sealing off each level and helping protect the people living below.

Today, Derinkuyu stands as one of the greatest engineering achievements of the ancient world, reminding us of the resilience, ingenuity, and determination of those who once called it home.

🇹🇷 Türkiye is full of hidden wonders—and Derinkuyu is one of its most remarkable treasures.
