🇹🇷 CITY SERIES: ESKİŞEHİR — “OLD CITY,” FULL OF LIFE!

Did you know? Eskişehir’s name means “Old City” in Turkish, but its riverside cafés, art, and lively streets give it a youthful spirit. Today, we’re exploring a city where historic neighborhoods and gondola rides belong in the same afternoon! 🚣

Wander through Odunpazarı, where colorful Ottoman-era houses line winding streets. Stop at Atlıhan Crafts Bazaar to discover lületaşı, or meerschaum—a soft white stone that local artisans carve into intricate pipes and keepsakes.

Then head to the Porsuk River for a waterside stroll, a boat ride, or a Turkish coffee with a view. This is a city that gives you plenty of reasons to slow down. ☕

And come hungry! Eskişehir is famous for çibörek, a crisp, fried pastry filled with ground meat and onion, reflecting the city’s Crimean Tatar culinary heritage. A little crunch, a juicy filling, and a very good reason to order another!

A city of heroes, poets, and unforgettable ice cream! 🍦

Did you know that Türkiye’s famous stretchy ice cream comes from Kahramanmaraş? Set beneath Ahır Mountain, this city brings together rich traditions, bold flavors, and a proud history.

🎖️ A name earned through courage
Once called Maraş, the city received the title “Kahraman”—meaning “hero”—in 1973, honoring its people’s resistance during the Turkish War of Independence. That’s how Maraş became Kahramanmaraş!

🍦 Ice cream you can eat with a knife and fork!
Traditional Maraş dondurması is made with goat’s milk, sugar, and salep, an ingredient derived from orchid tubers. Its famously dense, stretchy texture makes it very different from ordinary ice cream—and firm enough to serve in slices!

📖 A city with a literary soul
Kahramanmaraş is closely associated with the poets and writers known as “Yedi Güzel Adam,” or “Seven Beautiful Men.” Poetry and storytelling hold a special place in the city’s cultural identity.

🌶️ Beyond the sweet stuff
Maraş peppers bring warmth and flavor to the table, while Maraş tarhanası can be enjoyed as a comforting soup or in its dried, crisp form. Traditional bazaars and copper craftsmanship add another layer to the city’s heritage.

🫖 In Türkiye, “Would you like some tea?” often means “Stay a little longer.” ❤️

Today’s history lesson: Turkish tea, or çay (pronounced “chai”), feels like a timeless tradition—but it became an everyday favorite during the 1900s. A 1924 law helped encourage tea growing around Rize on Türkiye’s lush Black Sea coast, which became the heart of Turkish tea production.

So, how do we drink it? 🇹🇷
Tea is traditionally brewed in a çaydanlık, two stacked teapots: strong black tea in the top and hot water below. Mixing the two lets everyone choose their strength—açık for lighter tea or koyu for strong.

We serve it in small, tulip-shaped glasses that show off its beautiful ruby-red color. Usually enjoyed without milk, with sugar if you like, it’s a companion to breakfast, an afternoon break, or a conversation that lasts well into the evening.

And there’s no single “tea time” in Türkiye. Tea belongs at the breakfast table, in shops, at work, and wherever friends gather. Offering a glass is a small gesture that says, “You’re welcome here.” Just don’t be surprised when someone offers you another! 😊

On the shores of the Sea of Marmara, Yalova brings together seaside views, green forests, and famous thermal springs. But one of its most memorable stories belongs to a small waterfront mansion.

Today’s history lesson: In 1930, a plane tree beside Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s mansion needed more room. Instead of cutting its branches, the building was placed on rails and moved approximately 4.8 meters! That’s how it became known as Yürüyen Köşk — the Walking Mansion. A remarkable piece of engineering with a simple message: make room for nature. 🌿

Beyond the mansion, discover the hot springs of Termal, the greenery of Karaca Arboretum, and the forest scenery around Erikli Waterfall. Imagine finishing the day with a Turkish coffee and a view of the sea. ☕

🇹🇷 Turkish City Series: BURSA — Silk, History & İskender!

Today’s history lesson takes us to Bursa, an early Ottoman capital where grand mosques, old market courtyards, and generations of craftsmanship tell the story of a growing empire.

Imagine wandering from the historic Ulu Cami (Grand Mosque) into Koza Han, Bursa’s famous silk-trading center. Browse colorful silk scarves, then settle into the courtyard for a Turkish coffee. Some places deserve a slower pace. ☕

And then comes lunch… Bursa is the birthplace of İskender kebab! Thinly sliced döner, pieces of pide bread, tomato sauce, and yogurt turn a sightseeing break into something you’ll remember long after the trip. 😋
