High in the Ta**us Mountains near modern-day AฤŸlasun, Burdur, lies the ancient city of Sagalassos, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in Anatolia. Its most famous monument is the magnificent Antonine Fountain (Antoninler ร‡eลŸmesi), built around 161โ€“180 AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

Standing nearly 30 feet (9 meters) tall, the fountain was decorated with colorful marble, intricate carvings, and statues of Roman gods and emperors. Remarkably, after extensive archaeological restoration, water flows from the fountain once againโ€”just as it did nearly 2,000 years ago.

The fountain survived devastating earthquakes, centuries of abandonment, and the passage of time, making it one of the most impressive restored monuments in Turkey today.

Long before modern cemeteries, the ancient Lycians created one of the most breathtaking burial traditions in the world.

Carved directly into towering cliffs over 2,400 years ago, the Lycian Rock Tombs were designed to bring the deceased closer to the heavens. The Lycians believed winged creatures would carry souls to the afterlife, so they built their tombs high above the ground, overlooking rivers, valleys, and the Mediterranean coast.

The most famous examples can be found in Dalyan, where magnificent tombs are etched into the cliffs above the Dalyan River. Even after centuries of earthquakes, empires, and changing civilizations, these stone monuments continue to watch over the landscape just as they did in ancient times.

What makes them even more remarkable is their architecture. Many tombs were carved to resemble wooden Lycian houses, preserving details of buildings that would otherwise have disappeared from history.

Today, visitors from around the world travel to Dalyan to witness these incredible monumentsโ€”a reminder that great civilizations may fade, but their stories can endure for thousands of years.
