One of our favorite projects, and the first deployment of Mobile LiDAR for WisDOT.

As we celebrate Founding Month, we’re spotlighting iconic projects that define Michael Baker International’s legacy of engineering excellence, starting with Milwaukee’s landmark Daniel Hoan Bridge.

A vital commuter link for 42,000 vehicles daily, the two mile bridge required major rehabilitation after 40 years of heavy use and harsh Wisconsin winters. Michael Baker led the $200M Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) project, delivering five miles of structural improvements, ramp reconstructions and 2,500+ design sheets in just 17 months.

The team incorporated cutting edge solutions, including Movable Concrete Barriers to keep traffic flowing during peak hours, LiDAR for precise geospatial data and faster design and Stainless Steel Deck Reinforcement—the largest use in the Midwest—to extend the bridge’s lifespan.

National Surveyors Week, observed March 15–21, 2026, recognizes the essential work of surveyors and the vital role they play in shaping safe, resilient and thriving communities across the nation. The surveying discipline has been part of Michael Baker International’s story from the very beginning, our company’s first project in 1940 was a $25 survey that helped lay the foundation for the firm we are today.

Today, Michael Baker provides surveying and mapping services for the full range of disciplines within the engineering profession. Our wide-ranging surveying expertise and more than 105 professional land surveyors and technicians enable Michael Baker to efficiently complete even the most challenging survey assignment.
