Throwback Thursday: Frank and Mary’s Catfish House

Frank and Mary’s opened in 1945 at the end of World War II when Frank begin selling beer and fish sandwiches from the front room of his house. Since its beginning, Frank and Mary’s was located in 3 different locations around Pittsboro. Frank and Mary’s was known for their famous Catfish and was known around the state for their famous catfish dinners.

Back in 1951, a catfish dinner, which included one pound of catfish, choice of potato, choice of salad and bread and butter cost $1.50. What a deal! With fish fry season upon us, we are definitely missing Frank and Mary’s and the delicious food they provided our community for decades!

It has been said that the Locale in Brownsburg still uses the famous Frank and Mary’s catfish recipe!

Owner Greg Steller has created a menu full of elevated comfort food that keeps people coming back for more. From the crispy, flavorful fried chicken and perfectly prepared fried green tomatoes to the incredible brussel sprouts and creamy mac & cheese, every dish is packed with flavor and made with care. The menu also changes to keep you coming back to see what is new! Make sure to check out Facebook to see what special they have going on.

And let's not forget the cocktails! Whether you're meeting friends for dinner or enjoying a date night, Hoosier Roots serves up some fantastic handcrafted drinks to pair with your meal.

As if the food wasn't enough, Greg has been hard at work creating his own signature hot sauce, and soon you'll be able to purchase it right in the restaurant. If it's anything like the food he serves, it's sure to be amazing. While he is not at the restuarant or creating his new hot sauce, Greg also runs a full catering business, as well as serves meals to almost all the planes leaving the Indianapolis airport!

**Throwback Thursday**

Last week we learned about the Campfire Girls, this week we are going to throwback to the Boy Scouts.

Boy Scouts started in Pittsboro in 1920. This organization was created to help boys become responsible citizens and expose boys to outdoor living and teach them about God, country and self. Some of these groups even went on trips to the Explorer Ranch in New Mexico. In the past, the Boy Scouts typically met at the Pittsboro Christian Church and the Pittsboro Park.

Throwback Thursday: The Campfire Girls Incorporated

According to the “Pittsboro and Middle Township: Way Back When, Then and Now (1834–1992)” book, Campfire Girls Incorporated was organized in 1954 by Mrs. Wilma Jean Scamahorn and Mrs. Ethel Leland. In 1976, there were three groups with about 30 members. Those assisting in these years were: Pam Dalton, Loretta Alexander, Linda Synder Nelson, Mary Hand, Jan Ripberger, and Mary Loud Durham.

Great good was accomplished through the training program of the girls. There was an emphasis on prompting friendship, training in leadership and wholesome recreation. This group is no longer active, but there are many pleasant memories of friendships that started through this organization.

According to Campfire.org, Campfire Girls Incorporated originated in 1910 by Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick and his wife, Charlotte Vetter Gulick. They believed girls deserved the outdoor learning experiences that boys had and wanted to help guide young people on their journey of self-discovery. During this time, Girl Scouts did not yet exist. In 1975, they changed their name to Camp Fire Boys and Girls and membership changed to both boys and girls. In 2001, the name changed to “Camp Fire” and still has programs in 25 states in the USA.

The Campfire Girls did activities such as planting trees, community service and giving, and worked on building strong friendships with each other.

Thrift & Flip is a local furniture and home goods store owned by Wendy Lyon and Ashley Fair. They offer a fun mix of liquidation furniture, home decor, uniquely sourced pieces, donated items, clothing, rugs, baby items, seasonal items, and refinished furniture. They also have an online store, so customers can shop both in-store and online.

What makes Thrift & Flip unique is that every visit feels a little different. Their goal is to make shopping fun, affordable, and local — and to give people a place where they can find beautiful pieces for their homes without paying full retail prices.

Wendy and Ashley are both avid bargain hunters and the store came from their love of finding beautiful, useful, and unique pieces at great prices. Wendy has always loved thrifted room styling and helping people see the potential in secondhand and affordable pieces. Ashley is incredibly talented at bringing new life to furniture through refinishing and creative updates, so together they felt like Thrift & Flip is a fun mix of both of their passions.
