Growing up, baking was always a hobby of mine. I’m not sure which I enjoyed more, keeping my hands busy doing a somewhat mindless task or eating the results (spoiler: I was not a skinny kid). It wasn’t until post college that I identified baking as a form of therapy.
9 years ago, today, I sustained substantial injuries from a pretty hefty fall. Some were physical but the most severe injuries were the ones you couldn’t see which is very common with traumatic brain injury.
Once I was walking and talking again, one of the first places the nurses took me was to the kitchen. The purpose was to reintroduce me to some occupational practices I would need to do down the line. Inadvertently, baking a batch of cookies really helped realign myself with “pre-fall” Elisabeth, someone who was difficult to identify with due to the memory loss.
Today, 18 months after opening beehive bake shop, I’ve sold over 13,000 cookies and I can’t help but feel so damn proud of how far I’ve come from that little test kitchen in Spaulding Rehabilitation Center.
This week 25% of all cookie sales will be donated to to support them in the life changing impact they have on so many people ❤️
