Sam’s Home Bakery Origin/ Meet the Owner

Hello, world!

My name is Samantha Mascorro, owner of Sam’s Home Bakery. I am 20 years old, born and raised in Austin, a fanatic of all things sweet and spicy, a frequent watcher of the TV show Friends (I am able to recite almost every line, no shame) and lover of dogs. My bakery is very dear to me and I am so lucky to share my story with all of you.

When I turned 18 years old I was on the path to college. Having just graduated high school and packing for my move to UTSA for my freshman year, I was excited and felt like I was on the right path in life. During my first year at college, “life happened” is what I tend to say. Things became hard and I felt a shift in my life that I was not sure what to do with. My time at San Antonio is one I will never forget because it taught me so much. Not just academically, but in terms of how to live my life. I realized that I am the only one who chooses what makes me happy and successful in life. And that my academic career did not decide on whether or not I was happy or fulfilled in life. Upon completing my freshman year, on the Honor Roll may I add, I realized that I did not like being away from home. Thus I moved back home and decided to finish my basics at ACC. A full academic year passes and I still felt stuck... unfulfilled. I was getting close to finishing my Associates in Business Administration but I did not want to end up in an office, at all. My parents saw my struggling with where I was. I was not happy with where I was going. I started running an AVON business alongside my mom which was the only thing at the time that brought me joy and has helped me tremendously. But in the end, I wanted something that was mine, something that I can build up and call my own and show it proudly to everyone I met and knew.

“Why not start your own baking business?” my mom asked me one day during our talks on what I wanted to do in life. The question was absurd to me. Not because I thought I could not do it but... because I could not believe we did not think of this sooner! As a kid, I was baking all the time. Granted, at the time, it was box mixes. But hey, everyone has to start somewhere right? Baking was always a favorite past time for me. I would get so excited when I got a new baking tool or learned a new technique. I would even have baking parties with my friends growing up. Baking made me happy and I loved that other people got to enjoy it with me by eating what I made! Once I became older, I taught myself how to bake from scratch and tried to keep up with new techniques when I had free time. It brought me such joy. It was at that time that I decided that school was not for me, it did not bring me happiness and I felt the drag of it on myself daily. “Even if it is not school, be successful in something,” my mom told me when I was making the life-altering decision of not attending school anymore. I wanted to be successful in my own business. One I could grow myself.
