💗🌹Happy Valentine's Day! 🌹💞
The closest thing we currently grow to a rose...descended from prairie wildflowers, lisianthus (also known as prairie gentian or Texas bluebells) are said to symbolize appreciation and/or an outgoing personality in the Victorian language of flowers. Perhaps this is due to their beautiful qualities, sure to catch anyone's eye, much like someone with a bright, glowing disposition. Perhaps, because they take so long to reach maturity and flower (155-165 days!) we appreciate their magnificent blooms even more. Whatever the reason, they are gorgeous and we adore them. Wishing you all a beautiful day full of all kinds of love ❤

Continuing our language of flowers theme...sunflowers💛🌻 These beauties represent loyalty, longevity, adoration, and happiness. Part of their meaning may come from the Greek myth of Clytie and Apollo. The nymph Clytie was madly in love with Apollo, god of the sun. She would sit and gaze as he crossed the sky each day...day after day. Alas, her love was unrequited and some of the other gods, pitying her situation, turned her into the beautiful, bright sunflower. That is why, to this day, the sunflower's face follows the sun across the sky. ☀🌻

With Valentine's Day right around the corner we're thinking about the language of love and the language of flowers. We'll be highlighting some of our favorite varieties and sharing their meanings over the next couple days. 💗💞
First up, a flower that has very much been on our minds lately as it is usually one of our first to bloom: the tulip. In the language of flowers, tulips universally symbolize love (perfect for this time of year!). However, different colors may have different meanings. Red, of course, represents love, but be careful handing out yellow tulips...in Victorian times, yellow tulips were a sign of unrequited or spurned love. Heartbreaking!

Flowers in February...

Greetings from the Farm! Flowers are very much on our mind these days. They are a welcome escape from the depths of winter and a reminder that spring is not so very far off (less than 50 days!).  Recently we attended the Flowering in the North conference hosted by the University of Southern Maine a...

February is right around the corner, bringing with it the Celtic tradition of Imbolc, celebrated on February 1st and 2nd. This sacred time marks the midway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox, as the promise of spring grows stronger and the days grow longer. It’s a moment to honor renewal, light, and the stirring of life beneath the surface. This time of year at Rosaly's, we are busy behind the snowy landscape, planning for the coming season. Working on our crop plan & organic certification renewal, buying seeds and checking on the flower babies in tunnel 5. The fresh green of Spring is not far off....Happy Imbolc to you!

February at Rosaly’s Garden… Tucked under a blanket of snow & row cover, baby flower seedlings are growing. With the sub-zero temps we’ve added more layers of row cover and even put a heat mat under our crates of lisianthus and ranunculus in our propagation tunnel. We’ve had a little vole damage but seem to be keeping them at bay for the most part.
As the days get longer and the light gets stronger, we are busy planning for the coming season. Perusing seed catalogs, working on the crop plan, filling out our events calendar and renewing our organic certification. Lots of paperwork and math!
We are excited to be offering more classes on the farm this summer, including some veggie tastings. So stay tuned! Sign-up for our newsletter-link in our bio.
