Thought about my “Slice of Life” column I wrote for our local newspaper a few years ago and found some of the articles still online. Then looked for my blog. It’s still there in its entirety. I don’t know why I stopped writing. It’s time to get back at it. In the interim here’s a link to it to peruse in case you’re tired of scrolling through depressing news reports. If you click on any of the dates located at the bottom right you’ll be able to read the various entries. Enjoy!

Maybe with this warmer weather you’ve been thinking of Spring and the beginning of the 2026 season and you’ve been wondering how I’ve been spending my time. Traveling of course, keeping my resolution to read more but, as of late, I’ve been writing Trader Joe’s DAILY to plead for a Berks County location. If nothing else the employee(s) tasked with reading my notes will be amused. I’ve discussed the arrival of Whole Foods, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, median salaries and home values and Taylor Swift to name a few topics. It’s how I start my day. Every day. If you’re not familiar with Trader Joe’s groceries Google it. If you are familiar please write to them too.

We’ll be opening up Fisher’s mid May. Stay tuned!

My grandparents had something similar to this in their basement. It got donated in the late 90s when their house was sold. I need something like this for my vintage Pyrex so if anyone has one in their basement that they’re willing to park with for a reasonable price, please contact me.

Shoofly Pie, a beloved Pennsylvania Dutch dessert, traces its origins back to the late 1800s in the Amish and Mennonite communities of southeastern Pennsylvania. Originally a “molasses crumb cake,” it was created as a simple, durable treat that didn’t require refrigeration—perfect for cold farm kitchens and church gatherings. The name “Shoofly” likely came from bakers swatting away flies drawn to the sticky-sweet molasses as it cooled on windowsills. Made with layers of rich molasses, brown sugar, and a crumbly topping baked into a flaky crust, Shoofly Pie became a symbol of Pennsylvania Dutch ingenuity and thrift. Today, it remains a nostalgic staple at farmers’ markets and diners across the Keystone State, proudly representing Lancaster County heritage and Pennsylvania’s enduring love for homemade comfort food.

It’s the 21st night of September so don’t forget to leave out cookies for Earth, Wind and Fire tonight. Or maybe I should’ve posted this yesterday. Anyhow, if you are of a certain age you will get this joke and for those of you who are too young to get the reference (despite a cover by Taylor Swift) just google it.
