WHAT WE REALLY MEAN BY “A SWEET EXPERIENCE” ❤️

I've been thinking a lot about what it means to build A Sweet Experience.
Yes… We make desserts but I don't want us to be known simply as the people who make cookies and pies. I want us to be known for how people feel when they experience us.

Celebrated. Thought of. Welcomed. Appreciated. Remembered.

That's why our mission isn't just about what we bake.
It's about creating experiences through Presence, Integrity, Excellence and Service. PIES.

As we head into another holiday season, that's exactly the kind of experience I want us to help create for your family, your employees, your clients and your guests.

So if you're planning something for the holidays…

Don't just ask, “What are we serving?”

Ask, “How do we want people to feel?”

Right now it feels like the holidays are SO far away.

I’m learning a lot right now about not being so focused on the one thing I think is supposed to work that I miss the other opportunities God has already put in front of me. Today was a beautiful reminder of that.
LeKeytha invited me to her Brunch & Bouquets event. The ticket was $40, and I asked if she needed cookies for the brunch. She said, “Well, you can vend for $50.”
I was like, okay $10 more and I have the opportunity to make some money while I’m there. 🙌🏾
I still had to think about it because the truth is, I didn’t have the $40 or the $50. Plus, I’d have to buy ingredients, and it was a smaller event, so I didn’t know how much I’d actually sell.
I prayed about it, and I kept thinking about how I’ve been saying I want to invest in my community. I want to show up for things I enjoy and things I would genuinely pay to participate in. This was one of those things.
I asked LeKeytha if I could give her the money when I got there. She said yes. So I went.

I brought the cookies and every copy of my books that I had available.

Y’all 🥹 I made more money from the BOOKS than I did from the cookies.
I had been so focused on whether I could make enough money from the cookies to make the trip worth it, when I already had something else in my hands that could bring in income.

Sometimes I can get so focused on the product I think is going to sell that I forget I have more than one thing to offer.

We are created in God’s image and likeness, and God is an abundant God.

A Sweet Experience is bigger than cookies and dessert.

It’s about showing up. It’s about creating experiences. It’s about making connections. It’s about having multiple ways to serve people and create value.

Today, I got to do all of that.
I showed up for my community, supported something I wanted to be a part of, connected with some amazing women, made some money, and genuinely had a good time.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to put A Sweet Experience in this room.

Thank you, LeKeytha, my friend and soror 😏, for thinking of me and inviting me. This was definitely A Sweet Experience. 💕

I went to a brunch to sell cookies… and my BOOKS outsold the cookies. 😂

And honestly, I think God was reminding me: stop focusing so much on the one thing you think is supposed to work that you miss what’s already in your hands.

Nope.

Dessert can be:

✨ “Congratulations!”
✨ “Happy Birthday!”
✨ “I'm proud of you.”
✨ “I was thinking about you.”

Sweet potato pie. Yes, I understand why.

Food isn't just food. Sometimes there's a person, a memory, a holiday, or a tradition attached to it.

That's actually one of the reasons I love what we do at A Sweet Experience.

We're not trying to replace Grandma's recipe. We're trying to create something that becomes somebody else's favorite memory.

The Sweet Potato Pie Debate 🍠🥧

Okay, we need to know…

Sweet potato pie with a regular crust or a graham cracker crust? 👀

THIS is where A Sweet Experience gets interesting. 😂

Our sweet potato pie started as a birthday tradition for my son. His grandmother had always made him one, so when he came to live with us, I wanted to give him something familiar and comforting.

The next year, I made TWO.

One with a regular crust. One with a graham cracker crust.
Guess which one he chose?

The graham cracker.

He never asked me for the regular crust again. 😂
That's the recipe I eventually perfected and shared with the world.

I already know people have STRONG opinions about sweet potato pie.

So let's settle this:

Where It All Started ❤️

Back in 2012/2013, our two oldest sons came to live with us. They had been living with their mom, and because of the circumstances, they had been estranged from us for a while.

Rob and I had been believing God for the opportunity to have our sons with us, and then they came.

Our oldest son's birthday was August 19th. He asked me to make him a sweet potato pie because his grandmother had always made one for his birthday.

He was new to Oklahoma City.
New to our home, to me, and to Rob.
There was a lot of change happening all at once.

So I wanted to give him something familiar and comforting.

I made that sweet potato pie.

The next year, I made one with a regular crust and one with a graham cracker crust and he never asked for the regular crust again. 😂 So I kept perfecting that recipe.

Years later, in 2021, I finally decided to share it with the world. Y'all… the pie went VIRAL.

At one point, I was making about 50 sweet potato pies a week out of my kitchen at home.

A Sweet Experience actually started with a sweet potato pie and with a mama making a pie for her son.
That's still at the heart of everything we do.
