Remember when life was simpler and avocado toast was the culprit behind an entire generation's economic decline? Funny how a culture raised on stories about manna and daily bread somehow managed to make fancy toast controversial. 👀

Anyway, here's breakfast on our Coastal Vollkorn Rye sourdough. If you'd like a loaf of your own, today is the day. We'll be closed Wednesday and Thursday and back again on Friday with fresh bread and a whole new menu.

Hope you see you this afternoon, we're here until 4pm.

There was a time when pioneers crossed mountains, rivers, and continents in search of new possibilities. Today that same spirit often shows up in kitchens annd other small businesses across the world.

The landscape may have changed, but the act of pioneering remains much the same.

Both begin with the ability to see possibility where others see uncertainty. Both require a willingness to move beyond adversity and self-doubt. Both ask a person to venture into unfamiliar territory and return with something of value.

Every business begins this way. First it exists only in the imagination. Then through effort, discipline, & persistence it becomes something other people can experience.

Today's lunch came from Surf Hog BBQ, and it felt like a good reminder of that.

We see that creative fire in Shannon and Tom. They took an idea and turned it into something real through hard work and a genuine desire to feed people well.

This week also marks their one-year anniversary in business. Anyone who's built something from the ground up knows that the first year requires a whole lot of courage, long hours, and faith.

We're grateful to share the Peninsula with people who are willing to do the work of bringing good ideas into the world.

If you've been meaning to stop by Surf Hog BBQ, consider this your sign. Go grab a meal, congratulate them on their first year, and help support one of the many local businesses helping make this community what it is. 🍖✨️

As we turn closer to Summer Solstice, it's hard not to notice how much life is asking to be expressed right now. The forests are growing and the days seem to stretch on forever. Everywhere we look, nature is demonstrating what vitality looks like when conditions are right.

Most people think of this season as a time of abundance, and it is. The old traditions often understood something important about vitality, though. Life provides energy, but intelligence gives it direction. One without the other rarely creates much of lasting value.

For all our talk of power in the modern world, it seems worth remembering that some of the most transformative forces available to human beings are not force at all. An idea can outlive an empire and a conversation can change the course of a life.

A well-reasoned thought can accomplish what brute strength never could. We think this is a major lesson within the season right now.

Life is flourishing everywhere but the question becomes what we are choosing to do with that energy. What are we creating & building? What are we giving our attention to?

And on that note, Happy Blue Moon in Sagittarius. Sagittarius is represented by the archer. Before an arrow leaves the bow, it could travel in countless directions. Once released, its power comes from aim.

That feels fitting for this point in the year. There's no shortage of energy available. The more interesting question is where it is being directed... 🌕🏹☀️

Most people associate cranberries with autumn. But here on the Peninsula the bogs are already growing. Small pink flowers are starting to appear across the vines. The harvest is still months away but the next season of cranberries is already underway.

Living close to where food is grown changes the way we experience it. We become aware of the whole process, not just the finished product. On the Peninsula, cranberries are pretty well woven into everyday life. They show up in recipes throughout the year and find their way into all sorts of unexpected places.

That was part of the inspiration behind our newest scone.

Smoked turkey, pesto, & cranberry.  The turkey brings richness. The pesto adds a little brightness. The cranberries bring the tartness that ties everything together. Available at 9am. 🤤

You didn't have to be a Girl Scout to have a Thin Mint story. Maybe a sibling sold them or a neighbor knocked on the door with an order form. Maybe someone brought a few boxes into work.

For a few weeks every year they would show up and people all over the county would have conversations. How many boxes did you get? Did you put them in the freezer? Which GS cookie was actually the best?

Somehow a simple chocolate mint cookie became part of the collective memory of growing up for an entire generation.

We created the Thicc Mint with that memory in mind. It's our version of the classic. Two mint chocolate dipped cookies with mint buttercream in the middle. Familiar enough to spark a little nostalgia and large enough that nobody is confusing it with the original.

Available tomorrow. 😍

A lot of people are surprised to learn that German Chocolate Cake isn't actually German.

The cake was named after Samuel German, an English-American chocolatier who developed a type of baking chocolate for Baker's Chocolate Company in the 1850s. Decades later a recipe called "German's Chocolate Cake" became popular and somewhere along the way the apostrophe disappeared. The name stuck.

What makes the cake special is the coconut pecan filling. Rich, sweet, nutty, and completely different from most chocolate cakes people are used.

We also have Black Forest Cookie Sandwiches this weekend.

Black Forest desserts originated in Germany's Black Forest region and traditionally combine chocolate, cherries and cream. Our version takes that same flavor combination and turns it into a cookie sandwich with dark chocolate cookies and a house made tart cherry filling.

Both are rooted in old European baking traditions and both happen to be very good with a cup of tea on a beautiful coastal day. 🍒✨️
