Hunger within Oberlin is a very real thing. In the state of Ohio, 16.1% of households have experienced consistent food insecurity between 2000 and 2012, a significantly higher percentage than for the US as a whole (12.5%). Ohio's very own Lorain County suffers from the highest levels of poverty and hunger in the state. In 2013, the residential households of Lorain County had to be supported throug
h Oberlin Community Service's emergency food services 8,706 times, the equivalent of feeding 26,311 meals. Plant-A-Row is sponsored nationally by the Garden Writers' Association, and encourages all organizations and individuals to plant a little extra in their gardens for food banks and food pantries or to donate their surplus produce instead of throwing it out. Together, with organizations like Oberlin Community Services (OCS), our community can work together to alleviate food shortages within Lorain County and the City of Oberlin, providing for each other with nutritious local produce. Plant-A-Row also provides resources to organizations and households interested in starting their own gardens. We can provide free seeds, cloth planters, volunteer labor, information, and workshops. We can make change for our Oberlin community! To get involved...
