Inner Circle's Bad Boys has officially reached Platinum status in the United States, a landmark achievement coming nearly 39 years after the song was first released. The Recording Industry Association of America made the upgrade on March 4, pushing the track beyond the Gold certification it had carried since 1993 to reflect one million units sold.
Crafted by band founders Ian and Roger Lewis alongside Bernard "Touter" Harvey, the track was brought to life by the voice of the late Calton Coffie, who passed away in 2023. The song made its debut on the group's 1987 album One Way and found a second wind in 1993 as a standalone single, riding the wave of momentum from Sweat (A La La La La Long).
While most of the world came to know Bad Boys as the iconic theme for the reality television series COPS — and later as the inspiration behind the beloved Will Smith and Martin Lawrence film franchise — co-founder Ian Lewis has long stressed that the song carries a deeper message. At its core, it tells the story of a young person who strays from family and falls into a life of crime, a meaning Lewis feels has gone largely unnoticed despite the song's global reach.
The track climbed to number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and the album connected to it earned the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1994 — cementing Inner Circle's place in music history.
