Donuts Didn’t Always Have Holes!
Donuts today have a hole in the center, but it wasn’t always that way. The original donuts didn’t have holes. However, it was common for the center not to be cooked all the way through after cooking. First, nuts were stuffed into the middle of the donut (where the name doughnut comes from) to take away from the uncooked center. Then another alternative was to eliminate the center altogether. So, a hole was poked out of the middle which helped the donuts cook more evenly.

At the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair—which was billed as "A Century of Progress"—doughnuts were given the lofty title of "Hit Food of the Century of Progress." They became "a staple of the working class" during the Depression, according to Sally Levitt Steinberg, whose grandfather invented the doughnut machine.
