Neville's Donut Shop Neville's Donut Shop was in business for 55 years. The customers were real people with real lives who mattered.

Just sitting here on a Sunday morning, thinking of the many church bazaars that have been affected by the Covid-19 regulations. Many churches are trying to open in some way but the dinners, bazaars, and services have been curtailed for now. We often made small loaves of breads for Communion, rolls for lobster rolls, French Bread for Spaghetti dinners, etc. Bread is the "staff of life"! It is also symbolic: "give us this day our daily bread". If you think about it, there are as many kinds of bread as there are cultures: Pita, Rye, Tortillas, Anise, Cardamon rolls, Bagels; many more. A Bakery was always a central place in a community. Many scenes in Literature are written about Bakeries. There is a common saying that "a baker's wife knows more than anyone in the community about who is doing what to who!" Probably true!

I've been seeing different "Donut Shops" highlighted on television shows. The doughnuts are very fancy. Our donuts were something to have with a cup of coffee! What was your favorite? What time of day did you stop in to buy one or perhaps a 1/2 dozen? Was it on your way to work or after a night of play? Just asking!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! John will be making shortbread soon for Christmas. The traditional baking still goes on. Appreciate all who visit this page. You are all part of our happy memories of the donut shop.

John is busy making his holiday shortbread. You can purchase it and Hoppy Valley mustard and sauces from our son-in-law John at The Berkshire Medical Craft Fair, Friday, December 8, Pittsfield, MA.

People are always asking...when are you going to reopen the Donut Shop?
I thought it would be interesting to tell you how the Donut Shop started.
John Neville Sr. was a bread-maker at Renton's Bakery for years. Yvonne Smith worked in the Bakery. Yes, this is where they first met! When the regulators came in and said chemicals (preservatives) needed to be added to recipes to improve shelf-time, John said, "Not in my bread!" and left with his wife, Yvonne. Around about this time, John and Yvonne lived in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. These were the WWII years and though he had three children, John joined the Navy to help with the effort.
Yvonne, with other wives pulled together to give each other aid and comfort during this time.
The Atom Bomb was deployed ending the War and John came home. The Neville family moved back to North Adams and John, now a veteran joined the American Legion, becoming the commander. John, with his bread-baking skills and Yvonne, with her recipes, especially baked-beans started catering weddings and dinners held at the Grand Army Hall in North Adams. Their children: Peggie, Linda and John Jr. remember their parents and friends carving turkeys and the rolls and large pots of mashed potatoes.
North Adams, during the early 1950"s was an industrial town with many mill workers. Numerous diners opened early in the morning for a hot cup of coffee and a donut or muffin. John thought this was an opportunity to start a business where he would make the donuts and muffins for these diners.
In 1951,he rented a two-room space on Eagle Street and purchased a fryolator and an oven. Many of Neville's Donut Shop's first customers stopped in for 1/2 a doz donuts on their way to work; others were entrepeneurs who had their own baked goods trucks who delivered pies, bread, donuts and muffins to homes along a route. Neville's had their own deliveries to the diners and business offices for their meetings, and to cafeterias in many of the mills, where employers could get something to eat on their breaks.

Hi everyone,
We are fortunate to hear, "When are you going to make the donuts?" almost daily. The answer is ...we aren't. However, I think I should consider writing the Neville's Donuts Chronicles because there are so many stories to tell. I again offer the opportunity to tell your favorite memory, or describe your favorite donut that we made, etc. to be included in this new project of mine.
Don't forget: "Wherever you may ramble, however you may roll, keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole!"

I would love to have our former customers post when they came to the donut shop. Yes, when! Some people came on their way home from a gig, others came in on their way to work at 5:00 in the morning, many stopped in only on Sunday after church. Each customer had their own time and their own favorite kind of donut. There are stories to tell, believe me! When did you stop in?

When I first went to work at the Donut Shop, you entered at the entrance where "Pooches" is now. Customers and family all were in this tiny front room with a small window that my father-in-law looked through to see if a tray of donuts needed to be replenished. We also sold pies that I very rarely see for sale, now: prune, mince, pineapple, and of course apple. During the holidays there was also the Scotch meat pies.
