These may look like sweet, innocent oatmeal bars, but that halo of rich cinnamon-vanilla icing is hiding some devilishly delightful heat. Chili de arbol, black pepper, and cayenne have joined their cousins cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg to go bobbing for apples.

I could tell you about how these oatmeal cookies are bursting with tart, juicy pie apples, or perfectly spiced with a fragrant blend of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and a hint of black pepper and cayenne, or drizzled in a rich cinnamon-vanilla icing… but I’ve heard a picture is worth four-score and somesuch words 😋
