We’re a Belgian bakery and restaurant serving simple, wholesome and seasonal food. Le Pain Quotidien means “the daily bread” in French, and like our name suggests, we’re bakers at heart. Although our handmade, organic bread is how we got our start, we serve a variety of healthy options like organic coffee, pastries, eggs, tartines, soups, salads and desserts. At Le Pain Quotidien, we believe that

food should be simple, nourishing and delicious. That’s why we source ingredients that are local or organic whenever possible. We also believe in the importance of eating a healthy, plant-based diet, so you’ll find many vegetarian or vegan options on our menu.

Yes, it's tricky. (It was so simple in Belgium!) It sounds like this: luh paN koh-ti-dyaN and it means "the daily bread." Don't be shy—it takes some practice.

As a young chef in Brussels, Alain Coumont could not find the right bread to serve in his restaurant. Passionate about quality, he returned to his roots and decided to make it himself. He opened a small bakery where he could knead flour, salt and water into what have become his signature rustic loaves. That was in 1990, and those loaves are now the focal point of Le Pain Quotidien’s simple, wholesome cuisine in more than 200 locations on five continents. Le Pain Quotidien is a privately held company with its headquarters in New York City.

The tradition of fresh-baked bread is a routine worthy of repetition. Once Alain Coumont decided to open his bakery, he needed to decide on a name. He recalled a memory of his father exclaiming “moi, ce n’est pas mon pain quotidien!” literally translating to “it’s not my daily bread.” Alain knew he needn’t look any further for the words to hang above his bakery door. Welcome to Le Pain Quotidien, “the daily bread,” where the past meets the present and the future is today.

Situated on the corner of Hudson and Perry Streets, we are nestled in the heart of the West Village, one of the most storied and creative neighborhoods in New York City. With the vine-covered Greek revival townhouses of Leroy Street and the beautiful West 10th Street steps away, our traditional Belgian bakery-café mirrors the character of the neighborhood.

NYC Coffee Tour
I have been in NYC the past three days on a little spontaneous adventure before the Thanksgiving holiday… and let’s just say that an incredible chunk of the time I spent there was spent finding the best coffee (and of course, food, but that’s a different story entirely). There are HUNDREDS of little coffee stops that all boast pretty much the same drink menu, but I was on a mission to find some of the local best. Here are my picks:

You spend enough time at these bars that it's pretty much a given -- from time to time, you're gonna find yourself 1) in a strange NYC neighborhood in the AM, and 2) in need of a cup of coffee. Or five. For all those times... to times, rather than scrabbling at the empty bodega urn, pull up this guide: a roster of the best coffee shop in 30 NYC neighborhoods.
