Antonio Veniero was from from a little town in Italy called "Vico Equense". He was 15 years old when he came to NY and worked in a candy factory downtown. In three years they made him a manager and in six years after that he opened his on shop here at 342 East 11th Street. It was originally called Antonio Veniero Confections. He had an adjacent billiard parlor next door and also owned a Saloon across the street on 1st avenue. If you bought a beer (for a nickel) you got a free lunch! Near the turn of the century the word got out in Italy that if you needed a good baking job go to 342 East 11th street in NYC (Manhattan) and ask for Antonio Veniero. Back in those days Antonio was adamant on only buying the most expensive ingredients. Example: He would buy Valencia almonds instead of California almonds since the Valencia Almonds from Spain were thinner and sweeter rather than bitter ones from California. Always the choice hand picked ingredients (Higher standards). We also won many awards in 1925 (from Rome, Italy), 1933 (Bologna, Italy) and 1939 (NYC). We were shown on newsreels throughout the country back in the day explaining about a congratulatory letter from FDR/ and Secretary of War from a Carved cake made out of Gumpaste that depicted The National Recovery Act which won honors at the NY Exposition Hotel (1933). We shipped our famous biscuits in WWII to the troops overseas. We also made Frank Sinatra's wedding cake, Liza Minnelli's Birthday cakes and Joe Dimaggio was also a customer of ours. Many current celebrities and politicians have been through the doors of the pastry shop/ Cafe (same location since 1894). “To Cheech, I love your pastries but you’re killing me.” ❤️

That’s what Frank Sinatra wrote on a photograph for Robert’s dad, Frank Zerilli, who he called “Cheech.”

Sinatra was a regular here at Veniero’s, and our Regina biscuits were a favorite of his. But the story goes beyond his visits to East 11th Street, all the way to his home in Palm Springs.

Antonio wanted electricity for the shop. He ended up helping bring it to the neighborhood. 💡🇮🇹

In the early 1900s, Antonio approached the Edison company about converting Veniero’s from gas to electricity.

They gave him one condition. He needed ten local shopkeepers to sign a petition.

Everyone in the neighborhood knew Antonio, so he went from neighbor to neighbor and gathered all ten signatures.

With that petition, Edison brought electricity to the surrounding area, from 14th Street down to Houston Street, between First and Second Avenues.

Antonio helped turn the lights on for our little shop and his neighbors, too. ❤️

We’ve been going through the family photos. And we thought you might like a look. 🇮🇹❤️  October is Italian American Heritage Month, so we’re opening the Veniero’s scrapbook.  Our story begins with Antonio Veniero, who arrived from Italy in 1885 at just 15 years old. In 1894, he opened the doors right here on East 11th Street.  There was homemade candy, espresso and even a game of pool. The pastry cases you know today came later.  132 years later, we’re still here, with plenty of stories to tell and generations of customers to thank. You’ve brought us to your Sunday tables, celebrated birthdays with us and introduced your children to the treats you grew up loving.  All month, we’ll share old photographs, family memories and a few things you might not know about our little pasticceria.  Let’s start with you: who first brought you to Veniero’s? ❤️

Espresso beans on the tiramisu, strawberries pressed into the millefoglie, chocolate dust flying, fruit cakes getting their shine… it’s a busy morning at Veniero’s.

132 years today. ❤️🇮🇹

What do you even say after 132 years except… thank you.

To everyone who grew up coming here. To the families who made Veniero’s part of their traditions. To the parents who brought their kids, who now bring kids of their own. To our neighbors, our regulars, and everyone who walks through our doors when they’re back in New York.

You’re the reason we’re still here, doing what our family has loved doing for generations. And we wouldn’t want to celebrate today without you.

Tomorrow, we turn 132. 🇮🇹❤️

On September 23, 1894, our family opened the doors to Veniero’s right here in the East Village. 132 years, generations of family, countless birthdays, Sunday desserts, first dates, late-night coffees and a whole lot of cheesecake later... we’re still here. And we have a lot to be thankful for.

Twenty-five years later, we remember as a family.

In our window hangs the original American flag we displayed outside Veniero’s after September 11, 2001. Alongside it are plaques from the officers and members of Engine 28, Ladder 21 and Engine Company 5, as well as a special photograph and thank-you from the Ninth Precinct.

These treasured pieces will always remind us of the courage, kindness and unity our city showed during a time of unimaginable loss.

Today, we honor the lives we lost, the heroes who answered the call and the strength of our beloved New York City.

We were here then. We remember today. We shall never forget. 🇺🇸
