Brief pause in my cake making hiatus to give my son Simon this Star Trek cake for his sixth birthday!

I used black cocoa (it's a thing) and a smidge of powdered black food coloring to achieve the black coloring.

Pre-Hiatus Construction Cakes for the 5th Birthday of one of my son's classmates. The cakes were a big hit well before they were served. But, what can one expect when you put literal toys on cakes.

After this week, AvivaDolce Custom Cakes is going on a hiatus until further notice.

Thank you to everyone who was a part of this relatively short journey. It's been fun.

This past Friday was my son's 5th Birthday. He's been really into Mickey and Friends (reminiscent of his 2nd Birthday "fandom") and was able to give very specific requests for what he wanted his cake to be.

Flavor: Strawberry
Frosting: Chocolate

With Chip 'N Dale, Daisy Duck, and Cuckoo Loca (a relatively new character).

After I had planned the cake, he asked for Mickey Mouse..of course, I obliged, especially since I ready had a Mickey fondant cutter. But, having already planned the cake, it turned into a kind of "Hidden Mickey" at the back of his cake.

Most of the cake at his family birthday party, but there was enough leftover for him to have it for breakfast a few days in a row after. Lucky boy!!

This last Sunday, my son's preschool celebrated their 40th anniversary with a big party. I was asked to contribute a birthday cake for the occasion. I based my design entirely around the logo.

The "balloons" are made out of plain, clear gelatin colored with food coloring and luster dust. It was a somewhat time consuming, but well-worth it experiment!

Are You Ready for Some Football???

I'm not a huge sports fan. But you encounter a lot of hype for the Superbowl when one of the teams is semi-local and you are from a part of NJ that's on the cusp of NY and Philly sports fandoms.

Initially, I decorated a faux cake to celebrate the two teams competing today (last two photos). But then, my physical therapist commissioned this Eagles cake, and I had an excuse to be a little fancier than my faux cake, which is always fun.

So, Fly Eagles, Fly....I guess. 🦅🏈🏹

Last week was a cake Double Header! ;)

I don't usually do two cakes in the same week, but this commission came from a good friend of mine for her husband's big 4-0 birthday. I couldn't say no.

He's a born and bred Queens guy and a ride or die Mets fan. Naturally, I needed to make him a Mets cake!

All Aboard to The Isle of Sodor with Thomas & Friends!

I had the pleasure of making this Thomas the Tank Engine cake for one of my son's classmates.

It was fun creating the classic characters of Thomas, Gordon, James, and Henry/Percy. I think my favorite part was the three trains coming out of their respective tunnels.

Choo! Choo! 🚂

Flashback Friday to this quarter sheetcake I made for the 5th Birthday of one of my son's classmate's (and daughter to a lovely mom friend of mine).

The theme was Gabby's Dollhouse, a relatively new show on Netflix. This cake definitely challenged me as I used new techniques to make the fondant characters.

For the Cat Dollhouse and lettering, I made my own stencils and hand cut the fondant. For the cat figures I hand traced and painted each cat, and for Gabby herself, I was able to get a fondant/cookie cutter,.so she was pretty easy.

It was a lot of trial and error, but I think I'm all set to use these techniques more efficiently in the future!

Even though I don't celebrate Christmas, I decided somewhat last minute that I really wanted to make a Christmas themed cake. Christmas lends itself well to cake decorating both because of the imagery and symbols involved and because of the abundance of fun Christmas themed baking supplies, like the sprinkles I used as ornaments and poinsettias.

I decided to make a Christmas tree to maximizeq how decorated I could make my cake as well as wanting the challenge of carving a cake for the first time. In this case, it was carving a basic cone-shape. I also didn't really want to use a lot of fondant this time around. Only the star tree topper is fondant. Everything else is buttercream and sprinkles. 🎄

Happy Holidays!!!

Cake: Yellow cake with peppermint-white chocolate buttercream
