National Dessert Day is certainly a holiday I can get behind! Locally, we have so many amazing desserts but I think Debbie Does Doberge really “takes the cake!” Her king cake doberge is a must have at our house when it’s in season! But, we celebrate with doberge year around and have never met a cake we didn’t like!

People who don't live in New Orleans might not be familiar with another traditional cake that we eat here year round - the doberge cake. Pronounced "do-bash" or "do-berj", this cake was designed to withstand the subtropical heat and humidity, with a thick poured fondant to protect the inside's many layers and fillings.
In the past decade, New Orleans has a new queen of doberge kicking out every flavor you can think of - Debbie Does Doberge. This year, Debbie has two different king cake inspired doberge flavors, the original cream cheese king cake, and a boozy rum with salted caramel.
Each cake contains seven thin layers of sponge and six layers of pudding, a thin layer of classic buttercream, and a thick, sweet layer of poured fondant. They are each beautifully decorated and come in multiple sizes.
The cream cheese king cake is divine. It is soft and fluffy, warm with cinnamon and a great cream cheese balance that really tastes like king cake. The texture of these cakes really is very delicate and light, but very flavorful. The fondant is honestly my least favorite part, but it is easy enough to avoid in a slice.
This rum caramel does NOT skimp on the rum. It definitely has a kick of alcohol and carries the aftertaste as well. I could see this being too boozy for some but the caramel flavor is also so warm and sweet, and even though these cakes are refrigerated, if you let them come to room temperature the texture really shines.
Debbie Does Doberge is sold at Bakery Bar by the slice, and also in cute little single serving dobites. Debbie on the Levee is also slinging cakes in Kenner. You can preorder on their website and also ship nationwide with Goldbelly!
