Growing up in the Southend of New Bedford Ma.... We were so lucky to have so many Portuguese Bakery’s within walking distance. I can remember my dad almost everyday bringing home a couple of large brown paper bags filled with pops(rolls) and Vienna loaf. I knew that if the bread came in paper bags, it meant that the bread was still warm. The excitement was to eat one still warm with slathered butter along with a cup of coffee or tea.
Sometimes he would go to Sunrise Bakery, other times to Carmen’s & Homlyke ( both closed a few years ago) then there was Goulart Square Bakery.... just three short blocks away. I would pass it every day on my way to school and there was no guessing when they were baking fresh bread.... The amazing aroma filled the air for blocks!!! A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I drove to the southend and happened to drive by at the perfect time... someone had just opened the side door to the Goulart Bakery and he quickly took this picture.
I went in and ordered a dozen pops... and then was handed a large brown paper bag...and I couldn’t get home fast enough to enjoy them.
