BOSTON - Richard Moniz, 77, of New Bedford passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Loretta (Alves) Moniz.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph Moniz, Jr. and Alice (Sylvia) Moniz, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

Richard was the proprietor of Homlyke Bakery for many years, a family business that was established by his parents. His work in the bakery was his passion in life.

He was known for his generosity to many in the area, having donated bread and pastries to many organizations, including the Salvation Army, Market Ministries, veterans organizations, and local food pantries. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and traveling, and was affectionately known as the "Mayor" of the Seaport Marina in Fairhaven.

Richard was a veteran of military service having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Retail Bakers Association and a former member of the Prince Henry Society.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Loretta; and his sons and stepsons, Richard and his wife Lil, Michael and his wife Hilare, Kevin and his fiancee Cindy, David and his wife Nancy, and Jay; his brother, Joseph and his wife Leslie; his sister, Kathleen Mello and her husband Raymond; five grandchildren, Ian and his wife Joelyn, Seth, Camille, Jeremiah, and Caleb; a great-granddaughter, Payton; two nieces and a nephew; and his best friend and buddy - his grandpuppy, Simon.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Richard Moniz Culinary Arts Scholarship, P.O. Box 40096, New Bedford, MA 02744. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
