Happiest of Happy Birthdays to my brother !!!

37 years ago today you were dragged kicking and screaming into the world in the drive-thru line of that Wendy’s that I think is a wig shop now, and the world was made much better because of it!

I’m so intensely lucky to have you as my brother. You’re still the smartest, funniest, kindest, most thoughtful, patient and genuine person I know, and to see how adored you are by friends and family alike, I’m definitely not the only one that feels that way.

Well, Pete from that time way back didn’t care for you, but he was an as***le, so whatever.

Here’s to you - brother, friend, son, husband, father. You’re something quite special.

You do your morning stretches yet?

…oh how droll of me.

Monday is mix day; will try to get some shots of the BOTW tomorrow.

This week: multigrain sandwich loaves! Simple country sourdough with a multigrain porridge of toasted & soaked flaked oat, triticum, rye, wheat, and barley. The porridge lets me sneak extra water in so the inside is luscious. Makes a damn fine sandwich if I do say so, which I do.

Oh! When was the last time you drank water? Now seems like a perfect time to do that. Good job.

Just a quick one to point out how refreshing it is to live in a small mountain town that not only acknowledges LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, but flies the flag up & down the main drag on day one. Pretty nice public display - “gate’s open, come on in”.

With so many municipalities around the country doing everything in their power to marginalize, criminalize, erase members of their communities who love and live even slightly different from themselves, it feels good to be somewhere that is making some effort to be decent to one another.

And if the sight of two people with the same parts holding hands or kissing makes you feel uncomfy, well, maybe a little introspection is in order. Feeling a teensy weensy bit jealous?

Being cared about feels good, doesn’t it?
Being able to just be out and about having fun with and loving the people you love feels nice, don’t it?
Pretty simple, bud.

This week we’re running with Miso Sesame Whole Wheat as the Baker’s Choice bread.

If you aren’t already on the whole wheat train, buy a ticket and take the ride becuz, at the risk of tooting our own horn, these are some damn fine breads. Toot toot!

Well hot damn!

So, big things have been going on at Deer Creek Bakehouse!
As someone famous once said about change: “It’s coming for ya, kid”.

So it felt important to break the silence and announce these big and exciting ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!

First and foremostest, I’m thrilled to introduce the newest member of the DCBH crew, Angie! ()
She’s a crazy talented baker with a great energy and quick mind. Definitely feeling extra lucky that she wanted to come work with yours truly!

Which leads seamlessly to announcement II: the sequel - We have some big things planned; scaling the bread program, new offerings, and dare I say, possibly wading into the world of…pastry? Gasp! (I know).
More on that as it all develops :)

Our last big announcement- we’ve moved!!
Don’t worry, the kitchen is still in Nevada County, but we’ve put on our big kid aprons and moved into a commercial production space! More elbow room, hurrah!

We’re both wicked excited for this next chapter of slinging baked goods and bringing some big dreams into the light.

We mean this in the least menacing way possibe: Just you wait and see😁

This week, the “Baker’s Choice” rotating bread is:
Miso & Sesame Whole Wheat.

A 100% whole wheat bread with the delicious umami bomb flavors of miso paste & toasted sesame seeds. This is one of my absolute faves to make and to eat!

It’s my brother’s birthday today. He’s a much better person than I could dream of being. I feel immeasurably lucky to be related to this strong, smart, compassionate man. Really proud of you,

This picture is from when he came to SF from San Jose on a moment’s notice to save my bacon by helming my pizza pop up back in 2016, after I slashed my thumb on a mandoline and couldn’t work it. He slung pies for hours and left not a single person unhappy. He’s the kind of person who would do everything he could to help the people he cares about.

Love you brother. Happy barfday.

PS - the song is wrong, ain’t no better brothers out there.

I’m not weeping I’m just cutting onions, shut up.

Thrilled to announce that Deer Creek Bakehouse bread will be available at the Nevada City winter farmers market!
They’ll have both the Country sourdough and rotating weekly Baker’s Choice loaves on hand.
It’s an honor to get to share space with so many great farms and makers!

Can’t wait!

Slight change of plan for this week (1/7 - 1/13):
Instead of walnut whole wheat, the Baker’s Choice bread is Roasted Onion & “Everything” seasoning.

Our staple country loaf loaded with lightly caramelized onions and good ol’ “Everything” seasoning(like you find on bagels, y’know?).

They’ll be ready for subscribers to pick up on Wednesday & Thursday, and available at Good Morning Supply Co Friday afternoon :)

I’ll bring the whole wheat back into rotation soon, promise!

“I got something to say!!!” - Jerri Blank

Friday 1/5 I’m hosting a class at Good Morning Supply Company in Nevada City.
We will go over a lot of the basics of sourdough bread making with a focus on how you can make excellent sourdough bread at home (it’s actually not as hard as you think!).

We will talk about the process end-to-end, from creating and nurturing your own sourdough starter, to mixing, shaping, and baking, to creating a baking schedule that works you, and probably a lot more!

There WILL be a written exam at the end which counts for 40% of your overall grade, but it’s open notes and the teacher is a pushover, so no biggie.
Okay that last bit isn’t true…

This will be the first class I’ve ever led, which is exciting and terrifying.

Dark Chocolate & Cherries sourdough hearth loaves are this week’s Baker’s Choice bread.

Figured we’d double down on adding some sweetness to the upcoming holiday stretch :)

It’s our flagship country loaf, 50% whole grain flour, bursting with dried cherry, cocoa powder, and lots of Valrhona dark chocolate.
Cozy and delicious.

I know, I know, this month is already overloaded with sweet things to eat. I promise you’ll like it, and after, we can get back to the savory and unexpected, whaddya say?

Wednesday subscriptions will be picked up at Outer Heaven Espresso shop in Nevada City

Thursday subscriptions will be at our usual spot

This Friday, get one at Good Morning Supply Co while they last.

Alright folks!
