So, I was doing my morning Facebook scroll when I came across a post from another baker here in town. And by the way, if you aren't following her, you absolutely should, because she is such a sweet, genuine soul who does SO much for this community. Sometimes I'm blown away by the ways she shows up for people. Divine Butter Delights
I saw her talking about how despite offering to help the community, people still found ways to criticize her and be unkind to her while she's trying to help. And I left her a comment saying something that stuck with me afterward:
Sometimes, the people who genuinely care about you, appreciate you, and support you are a lot quieter than the people who complain.
I sat there looking at my own comment and thought, Okay, Megan, maybe you need to take your own advice. 😂
It's so easy to give someone else that advice when you're looking at their situation from the outside. You can see all the good they're doing, how much they're appreciated, and how unfair it is for a handful of negative people to make them question themselves.
I have SO many people in this community who support me, encourage me, and show up for my little business. I have customers who go out of their way to recommend me, people who celebrate my accomplishments, and people who remind me why I love what I do in the first place. I don't ever want to take those people for granted.
Yet sometimes, it only takes a handful of negative comments, a little bit of drama, or a few unkind people to make you forget about all of that. Isn't it crazy how easily our minds can give so much weight to the negative that we start overlooking all the good?
We have to stop letting a few unhappy people have that much power over us.
For every person who has something negative to say, there are so many more people quietly cheering you on. For every person who tries to tear you down, there are people who genuinely want to see you succeed. And for every person who chooses to criticize what you're doing, there are people who appreciate your efforts, and are grateful that you're here.
I believe that sometimes people see what you're doing, and instead of being inspired by it, they allow their own insecurities or jealousy to turn into criticism. Rather than encouraging someone, they try to make them feel smaller. And while we may never know someone's true intentions, we don't have to let their opinions define us.
Don't let the loudest voices convince you they're the majority. Don't let a few negative experiences make you forget the hundreds of beautiful ones. And don't let the people who fail to appreciate you distract you from the people who do.
Keep being kind. Keep showing up. Keep doing good things, even when not everyone understands them.
And most importantly, remember to give the positive the same attention you've been giving the negative. Because sometimes, the love has been there all along. We just get so caught up in the criticism that we forget to look around and see it. ❤️
