It can’t be said enough: thank you all so much for the massive outpouring of love and support you’ve shared. The memories, the stories, the feelings. I know Mathew is receiving all your love like a sweet prayer covered in sprinkles and frosting.
We first debuted Popcorn & M&M’s back in Spring 2022. Mathew and I loved going to the movies. His favorite meal for a picture was a gigantic and crisp Diet Coke and a gigantic and buttery tub of popcorn. It may (or may not) surprise some of you that he wasn’t the biggest fan of chocolate. He’d eat it, sure, but it would never be his first choice in a sweet. But he did like M&M’s, and he understood very well how their candy-coated power magnified when combined with salty and buttery popcorn.
That first version of Popcorn & M&M’s contained multitudes: mini M&M’s, popcorn, AND Sno-Caps (again, understanding the assignment). But he wanted to switch things up for this new version. Something brighter, cuter, and with more unicorns. In the last couple months, Mathew sourced customized M&M’s emblazoned with our beloved unicorn logo. He also switched out the Sno-Caps to rainbow nonpareils which align much more harmoniously with the overall PDC vibe. And while he did make these small changes, the flavor is still there. The flavor is still here. It was never going anywhere.
I suppose, in a way, this is the last cookie Mathew worked on. He had tons of ideas and it’s hard right now to live in a world where he’s not able to use his mind, his hands to create his magic. But what we do have of his, we will continue to share. It’s unlikely there will be anything “new” coming out of the PDC kitchen. There will be returns of old favorites which may be new to some or most of you. But there is no plan to bring in a pastry chef to continue expanding the PDC lineup. Which is not a knock on any pastry chefs as there are so many brilliant and fantastic pastry chefs in this world. Mathew was close with many of them. But, there is only one Mathew Rice. Mathew Sweet. Matty. Chooch. And no one can compare.
In this very weird time of transition, beginning next week on August 10th, we will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays. This may be temporary.
