This past week, we were honored to be part of the City of Naperville, Illinois, Government proclamation that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month in the City of Naperville. Our employees loved going to the council meeting and being presented with the certificate of proclamation. Our employee, Michelle Anderson gave a short speech about her job as well. We are so proud of the hard work our employees put in every day! Thanks for everyone's support on this journey to provide purposeful employment for adults of all abilities.

We are thrilled to welcome our newest employee, Ben Borden!
Ben is 18 years old, and has grown up in Naperville. Ben has always loved to bake and make creative and delicious desserts. He is a recent Metea graduate, and is entering the District 204 STEPS Program (Supported Training Experiences Post Secondary).
Ben has two sisters, one brother, and a pitbull named Duke. His favorite color is green. Ben's favorite dessert that he made was a chocolate and strawberry layered cake. He loves Maroon 5, Queen, Blake Shelton, Marin Morris, Gwen Stefani, and Justin Bieber.
When he's not in the kitchen, Ben loves swimming, kayaking, hiking, watching cake decorating videos on YouTube, playing hangman, and listening to music. Ben loves to laugh, and get other people to laugh along with him.
Nothing delights Ben more than hearing people speak with an accent... especially British.
Dream job for Ben? Working in a bakery!!!

Our Latest Update:
In 2022 we have had some great successes and some major hurdles! We celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st and sold 561 Down Syndrome Awareness Ribbon cookies. $1 of each cookie was donated to the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network in Cincinnati, Ohio. In April, we featured a cookie entirely made by our employee, Jake Lukens, in celebration of Autism Awareness month which was a great success! In May, we collaborated with several local organizations including Delta Dental of Illinois, Minooka School District and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church to provide cookies to staff, students, and families of these organizations. This past Monday we were at the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) golf outing to pass out our Monster Cookies to every golfer as they support a great organization. We are thrilled with these partnerships and with the support of our local community as our bakery continues to expand beyond the limits of our home kitchen.
We have been learning so much about the good and bad of commercial real estate. Over the past few months, we’ve toured several potential spaces for the bakery. Some have been very promising only to slip through our fingers while others have not been the right fit for a variety of reasons. We are still on the hunt for the right spot!
In addition to searching for the right space, we have also had numerous discussions with food vendors, equipment wholesalers and local businesses for potential partnerships. Each of these companies would like to help us out beyond a typical business relationship but have been unable to do so since we are not a non-profit organization. Additionally, we were hoping to have volunteers help us out once the bakery opened and we learned this is not possible for a for-profit company. Therefore, we began working with a local attorney that has helped us form a non-profit organization called the Moose & Me Baking Company. Nothing changes on the Moose & Me Bakery front, you can still order our wonderfully made treats by wonderfully made people. For those of you that were part of our Kickstarter campaign, this does not impact the reward tiers or items you will receive from us once we open. However, having this parent non-profit organization will allow us to pursue ingredient donations, equipment donations, partnerships with other non-profit organizations, apply for specialized grants and solicit donations from individuals. We are committed to the long-term sustainability of employing adults of all abilities in Naperville and believe the creation of this non-profit is the best way to do so. Thankfully this entire process has not stopped us from looking at potential spaces. In fact, it may create more opportunities as landlords are more charitable with their spaces if leasing to a non-profit.
We could still use your help! If you know any local individuals that own commercial space in Naperville of 1,800 square feet or more, we would love to connect with them.
