🌺 Uncle Sonny’s Melody of Resilience: A Punaluu Ohana Story 🌺
If you’ve ever stepped into Punaluu Bake Shop on the Big Island, the warm aroma of fresh sweetbread and the gentle strumming of a guitar probably greeted you right along with our smiles. That’s Uncle Sonny Ramos — our beloved resident musician, whose music feels like sunshine wrapped in aloha.
What many don’t know is that before the peaceful melodies, Uncle Sonny was a young soldier serving in Vietnam. For one terrifying year, every day brought the chaos of gunfire, mortar explosions echoing through the night, wounded friends, and the heavy weight of loss. The world around him was loud, uncertain, and unrelenting.
But even in the darkest hours, Sonny found light. In the evenings, he’d slip outside with his ‘ukulele and let soothing Hawaiian songs flow. The gentle rhythms calmed his spirit when nothing else could. He watched Marines play country tunes on their guitars — sad songs that didn’t quite speak to his heart — but he listened, learned, and taught himself anyway. That guitar eventually became his main companion, turning pain into peace, one chord at a time.
Three things carried Sonny through: his loving wife, the support of the Veterans Administration, and most beautifully — music.
“Music helped me to stop thinking negative thoughts,” Sonny shares with a warm smile. “At first I played just for myself. Then people started asking me to perform at restaurants, wedding receptions, and small parties.” Today he keeps it intimate — peaceful, quiet music for small groups. Big crowds and noise still feel overwhelming, but in cozy spaces like our bakery, his music flows freely and heals.
Here at Punaluu Bake Shop, we are deeply grateful for our nation’s veterans and especially for Uncle Sonny. For thousands of visitors, his songs have turned a simple bakery stop into a heartfelt memory. He’s not just our entertainer — he’s pure ohana. Family.
Sonny’s story reminds us that healing comes in many forms: a supportive partner, helpful resources, and the universal language of music that connects us all. Whether you’re a local, a traveler, or just someone who needs a little peace, come by, grab a warm malasada or slice of sweetbread, and let Uncle Sonny’s melodies wrap around your heart.

🌞 Summer is Officially Here at Punaluu Bake Shop! 🌴

The longest day of the year is almost upon us — astronomical summer begins this Sunday, June 21st! In Hawaii, the Sun will rise around 5:50 AM and set around 7:10 PM on the solstice, giving us over 13 hours and 20 minutes of daylight — perfect for beach days, family gatherings, and enjoying fresh-baked treats under the golden Hawaiian sun!
