The end of February springs to mind the music of the ages and all of those special people who have contributed to it.
This week, we are going to review some of these very special people in connection with Black History Month ❤️
Classical music has a deep and rich history with many wonderful contributors along the way.
Florence Price was born in 1887 in Arkansas. As a deeply religious person, she composed beautiful music inspired by the music of her church and some European composers, including Tchaikovsky. Her music was performed in 1933 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; it was declared "a faultless work, a work that speaks its own message with restraint and yet with passion... worthy of a place in the regular symphonic repertoire." Have you listened to it? If not, take some time to listen to it. Mrs. Price composed over 300 works and was steadily involved in the music community, including teaching. Mrs. Florence has a list of accomplishments - so much to learn about this amazing individual! Florence Price was the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra.
Now, let's step a bit further back in time to meet Mr. Francis "Frank" Johnson. Born on June 16, 1792 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Frank was an American musician and prolific composer during the Antebellum period, which was a rare achievement during this time! He composed over 200 compositions of various styles, including operatic airs, Ethiopian minstrel songs, patriotic marches, ballads, cotillions, quadrilles, and more. He was the very first African American composer to have his works published on sheet music, to give public concerts, and to participate in racially integrated concerts in the US. Frank introduced the promenade concert style to America - where the audience stands and moves around the space to follow the performers. Interestingly, his musical style is mostly inferred, as the transcripts and sheet music contain the musical framework, but not all the instructions for the rhythmic stylings that were done during the performance. He was well known in the US and internationally.
