The end of February springs to mind the music of the ages and all of those special people who have contributed to it.

This week, we are going to review some of these very special people in connection with Black History Month ❤️

Classical music has a deep and rich history with many wonderful contributors along the way.

Florence Price was born in 1887 in Arkansas. As a deeply religious person, she composed beautiful music inspired by the music of her church and some European composers, including Tchaikovsky. Her music was performed in 1933 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; it was declared "a faultless work, a work that speaks its own message with restraint and yet with passion... worthy of a place in the regular symphonic repertoire." Have you listened to it? If not, take some time to listen to it. Mrs. Price composed over 300 works and was steadily involved in the music community, including teaching. Mrs. Florence has a list of accomplishments - so much to learn about this amazing individual! Florence Price was the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra.

Now, let's step a bit further back in time to meet Mr. Francis "Frank" Johnson. Born on June 16, 1792 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Frank was an American musician and prolific composer during the Antebellum period, which was a rare achievement during this time! He composed over 200 compositions of various styles, including operatic airs, Ethiopian minstrel songs, patriotic marches, ballads, cotillions, quadrilles, and more. He was the very first African American composer to have his works published on sheet music, to give public concerts, and to participate in racially integrated concerts in the US. Frank introduced the promenade concert style to America - where the audience stands and moves around the space to follow the performers. Interestingly, his musical style is mostly inferred, as the transcripts and sheet music contain the musical framework, but not all the instructions for the rhythmic stylings that were done during the performance. He was well known in the US and internationally.

Do you know Barbara Hillary? She is quite amazing.

Born in 1931 in New York City, she grew up in Harlem, and attended school to become a nurse. After surviving lung cancer and retiring from nursing, Ms. Barbara raised money to travel to the North Pole. She became the first Black woman and oldest person (at age 75) to reach the North Pole in 2007.

In 2011, only four years later, she raised money again to travel to the South Pole; she made it on January 6, 2011 (at age 79) making her the first Black person to travel to both the North and South Pole.

Ms. Barbara was an advocate for issues of the Arctic. She dedicated the later years of her life educating people on these issues. She was an inspirational speaker and an activist. She founded the Arvene Action Association and the Peninsula Magazine. Her compassionate and intellectual approach to caring for the environment and others carried forward through her work and her accomplishments.

Today, we honor Mrs. Harriet Tubman.
- As a conductor on the Underground Railroad, she led dozens of individuals to freedom in the North over several trips.
- During the Civil War, she worked as a nurse and then as a spy for the Union Army, putting her own safety second.
- Later, she advocated for African American and women's rights, insisting that all be afforded dignity, treated with respect and granted equality.

The young girl born as Araminta Ross in Maryland became a historical figure of courage, bravery, commitment to equality and inspiration to future generations. Her life and life's work is meant to be honored and never forgotten.

As the National Women's History Museum quoted, "Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."

Known as the “Moses of her people,” Harriet Tubman was enslaved, escaped, and helped others gain their freedom as a “conductor" of the Underground Railroad.
