Over generations calling a yellow cake with chocolate frosting "chocolate cake" remains a widely accepted and expected regional norm. Historically, it has been a beloved staple for Sunday dinners, family reunions, and holiday celebrations.
Before the invention of commercially produced powdered cocoa and mass-market baking chocolate in the late 1800s, chocolate was a rare and expensive luxury. Because it was difficult to mill, home bakers typically didn't dilute what little cocoa they had into an entire cake batter. Instead, they made a traditional yellow or white sponge/butter cake and concentrated the chocolate into a rich frosting
